“Would stay again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

Hotel Lucas is in the perfect location for touring the old town. It is at times very busy, as it is a very popular spot. But we found the food to be pretty good - and interesting and most of the hostesses very good. The hotel itself is average... but very quiet for sleeping. Made a reservation already for the next time...

Room Tip: Choose a room towards the river...

My mom and I stayed at this hotel for one night during the Christmas markets in December 2011. First, the pros of this hotel: very good location, right by all the main sights in Nuremburg and right around the corner from the Christmas market; good price for such a central location; pleasant staff; breakfast was included and what we had was very good and what other patrons had looked really great; and a spacious, clean and cute room with small kitchen.

And now the huge negative, which will keep me from staying here ever again, was the rock-hard bed in our room. I usually like really firm mattresses, but I’ve never lain on a mattress this hard in my life. The one night we were there, my mom said she slept maybe an hour, and I think I slept maybe 3 hours, all because the bed was so hard. It was just impossible to get comfortable. Around 3 am I finally took my comforter (which was so dense and heavy that when it was on top of you it felt like one of those lead vests you wear during x-rays at the dentist) and laid it under myself to act as a feather bed to give myself a little bit of padding on top of the brick-like mattress. I was finally able to sleep a little then, but without that padding, I never would have gotten comfortable. Because of this one huge flaw, I just can’t recommend this hotel, even though it was otherwise pretty good. Also keep in mind that there are no elevators, which is fine for folks that are young and/or in shape, but my mom, who's 71, had a tough time with all the stairs up to our 4th floor room.

This was our second visit to Hotel Lucas. We visited the world famous Nuremberg Christmas market for opening weekend and the location of this small city hotel is hard to beat. It is located just a very short walk from the main market square of the old town. The pedestrian zone location makes traffic noise obsolete and the excellent windows dampen any late night revelers' festivites. If arriving by personal vehicle, the Adler Strasse parking garage is within easy walking distance when exiting the elevator at Kaiser Strasse level. There is no elevator in the hotel, and many stairs to climb, but this erased some of the guilt of all the empty calories one can consume at a German Christmas market. The hotel rooms themselves are very clean, compact, comfortable and provide free Internet access to those with a laptop. The made to order breakfast offers a few choices such as eggs, bacon, yogurt, meats, cheeses, rolls, jams, juice and typical hot beverages. The staff are friendly and professional. The restaurant below was always crowded and without a reservation it may be difficult to find a table later in the dinner hour. We found the quality and price of the food to be quite reasonable. Not too many extra hotel services, but honestly for the location and price we were very satisfied and would not hesitate to stay here again.

We loved the room here, had a great view and woke up to church bells every morning. Good breakfast in the cafe below, nice place to sit for a drink in the evening. Only drawback was no elevator and in our case 76 stairs to our room (which was fine most of the time, a bit hard with luggage though) and there was never anyone at reception, we had to go to the cafe for checking out. That been said we would definetly stay here again.

The Hotel Cafe Lucas is above a nice restaurant on Kaiserstrasse in the heart of central Nuremberg. They also have suites in the apartment building next door (which is where we stayed).

We are a family of 4 with a 15-year old son and 10-year old daughter. The suite was a sparingly furnished, but elegant and modern, 2 bedroom apartment comprised of:

- a small living room,
- a front bedroom facing the street,
- a back bedroom, with a door onto a back verandah overlooking the Peignitz River;
- a kitchen (2 burner range; small fridge; sink)
- a w/c
- a shower and wash room

It is very clean, comfortable, and was more than adequate for our needs.

The staff (you check in at the cafe) are professional and competent.

The included breakfasts are huge (LOTS of breads and choices of eggs, meats, etc. etc.). All in all, it's a terrific and reasonably priced (145 Euros per night for our stay) alternative to the more expensive hotels. Furthermore, the location is ideal for walking tours of central Nuremberg.

  • Liked — Spacious, clean, and terrific location
  • Disliked — Nothing. It suited us perfectly

We had a family emergency while staying in Germany and were forced to change our travel plans. We called Hotel Lucas 24 hours in advance to cancel our reservation and we were told they require 3 days notice for a cancellation. They charged my credit card 80% of the room price. I have reviewed my booking confirmation and this policy isn't described. Very disapointing.

The location of this hotel is definitely its strongest selling point. Located on the river, it is a two minute walk from the Christmas market, and only a ten minute walk from the castle.

We only stayed one night at this hotel, but were pleased with the room and cafe breakfast. Our room (301) had a balcony that looked over the river and old town area.
