Design Hotel Vosteen is one of those rare boutique hotels that succeed in bringing out the full flavor of comfort, intimacy, and warmth in its own unique style.
Each of the 11 rooms has its own name and seems to have its own theme (there are no room numbers). While not particularly striking by themselves, the themes conjure up a feeling of “I wish I had rooms like this at my home”. In fact, no single part in the hotel stands out by itself, but it is the sum of everything – cozy layout of the room, a thoughtfully-placed rug at the foot of the bed, city guide booklets and maps not just at the lobby but in every room, immaculately clean shower stall, bathroom heater that doubles as towel hanger/drier, a few extra amenities that are at the just right place, homey tea tables in corridor, 60s-ish breakfast room where guests can pick up complimentary bottles of mineral water or cups of tea or coffee at any time – that made us truly at home and delighted. In every aspect, this hotel goes a step or two further than other mid-range properties, and manages to bring them together as a cohesive whole that is better experienced than explained.
Breakfast is another example of going just a tad further than the competition; it has a little more variety, more fruits, and some interesting dishes.
The two ladies at the front desk are a little slow in action but mean very well, and try to accommodate all the reasonable requests. Many independent German lodgings, when asked to keep luggage before check-in or after check-out, store them in a room with open access, but here they place them at a corner in line-of-sight from the front desk.
The hotel is competitive location-wise as well. It is just outside of the old city wall, near Rathenauplatz U-Bahn (subway) station. While hotels inside the walls are more convenient for sightseeing, it is five or so minutes of walk to either the northern or the northeastern opening into the Altstadt (old city). Also, Rathenauplatz station is mere two stops from Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof (main train station).
Design Hotel Vosteen is a combination of two ingredients that rarely go together – motivated love for the property and knowing how to run it well. It is by no means flashy nor luxurious, but it is very thoughtfully designed and carefully kept. We highly recommend this little gem, especially for travelers staying in Nürnberg for two or more nights.
Room Tip: Ask the front desk. They will give you the best among the unoccupied rooms.
