“A Pleasant Stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

My sister and I stayed here for 2 nights in December for the Christmas Markets. The location was great-very close to the train station but inside the old town. The Christmas Market was less than a 10 minute walk, but often took us longer because of our visits to the shops/stands along the way.

Our room was on the 6th floor with nice views of the town. Our room was clean and we felt like we had plenty of room and storage space.

We did not opt for breakfast, so can't comment on that. Other reviewers have mentioned the unfriendly staff; however, this was not our experience. Soon after arriving, I asked the staff person where I could make a local call to cancel an existing reservation I had at another hotel(I forgot to do this before leaving home), and she called and cancelled it for me. Another staff person treated us to a piece of chocolate when we asked what their favorite brand of chocolate was. They were always polite and helpful to us.

All in all, a very good stay!

The previous reviewers say it all -- the location is fabulous, just inside the Altstadt on the main shopping drag, within a few hundred yards of the train station.

Unfortunately, we encountered the same grumpy staff others have mentioned, but they won't deter me from staying there again. The price sure was right.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the first of our non-smiling front desk gals, who went through the motions to check us in. She gave us a non-smoking room, overlooking a back courtyard/fire-escape. We were glad for the quiet.

The room was a typical Ibis room -- spacious enough, spotlessly clean and a decent bed with fluffy duvets. However, the pillows were pathetic -- itsy bitsy ones, the tiniest we've ever encountered. Almost like they were for toddlers! But, they supported our head and we made do.

We spent 2 nights there, over a weekend. Nuremberg seems to really hop on the weekends, with lots of folks in the bars and on the street. We did hear some noisy/drunk guests in the stairwell/hallways late on Saturday night, but other than that, it was pretty quiet.

During our comings and goings, none of the front desk staff ever said good morning or hello to us or smiled. Very strange. I spoke to them in German, too, same reaction. We've stayed in a few Ibis hotels before, and the employees are usually very friendly. Maybe they banish the grumps to this place in Nuremberg? Who knows.

But, if you don't need friendly service and are just looking for a cheap place to stay in a neat town, this will do.

Room Tip: Ask for a non-smoking room, in the rear of the property, if you'd like a quiet, clean-smelling r...

This hotel has a fantastic location in the Aldstadt, very handy for sightseeing. It is right next door to a great brauhaus, with plenty of restaurants nearby. Our room was bigger than we anticipated, with a much bigger bathroom than previous Ibis hotels. It was very clean and the staff were fine. The bar isn't really a bar though, just a few bottles of booze near reception and nowhere to sit! The Internet corner was also located here (1 PC) and you would feel in the way if you tried to use it. Great base for exploring the city though, which is incredible.

One downside, we did find our room baking hot with no apparent way to turn down the heating, which meant we struggled to get a good night's sleep.

I recently stayed at the Ibis Altstadt for two nights. The hotel is located in the Old Town, across the street from the tourist center and just 2 minutes walk from the railway station. I found the reception staff, during my several interactions with them during my stay, to be polite and cordial but not necessarily welcoming or helpful.

I was assigned a single room. As others have mentioned, the room is very basic and small, but adequate in size to be comfortable. It was, however, clean and bright and the bed comfortable with clean linens. My room overlooked the courtyard of the adjacent museum. The bathroom was rather small with very little "legroom" next to the toilet (see photo). Hand and bath soap is dispensed from a wall mounted container.

My room rate did not include the buffet breakfast so I paid the 10 Euro cost. Although not extensive, the buffet was adequate offering breads, pastries, cereals, cold cuts, and I believe scrambled eggs, in addition to coffee, tea, and juices. Overall, not bad for the cost.

If you are looking for a basic, clean place to stay, at an affordable price, while visiting Nuernberg, this Ibis is a good choice.

GETTING THERE

For directions by train from the Nuernberg Airport, please see the posting by contributor "Elgar" on 10/24/12. From the hauptbahnhof (railway station), take the escalator down to the basement level as you exit the walkway from the platforms. Follow the signs to the "aldstadt" (old town). At the bottom of the escalator, stay to the right, then veer to the left when you see the bakery on the left. Walk straight, up the cobblestone pathway. At the top of the ramp, the hotel will be on your left next to the Hotel Victoria.
