I recently stayed at the Ibis Altstadt for two nights. The hotel is located in the Old Town, across the street from the tourist center and just 2 minutes walk from the railway station. I found the reception staff, during my several interactions with them during my stay, to be polite and cordial but not necessarily welcoming or helpful.

I was assigned a single room. As others have mentioned, the room is very basic and small, but adequate in size to be comfortable. It was, however, clean and bright and the bed comfortable with clean linens. My room overlooked the courtyard of the adjacent museum. The bathroom was rather small with very little "legroom" next to the toilet (see photo). Hand and bath soap is dispensed from a wall mounted container.

My room rate did not include the buffet breakfast so I paid the 10 Euro cost. Although not extensive, the buffet was adequate offering breads, pastries, cereals, cold cuts, and I believe scrambled eggs, in addition to coffee, tea, and juices. Overall, not bad for the cost.

If you are looking for a basic, clean place to stay, at an affordable price, while visiting Nuernberg, this Ibis is a good choice.

GETTING THERE

For directions by train from the Nuernberg Airport, please see the posting by contributor "Elgar" on 10/24/12. From the hauptbahnhof (railway station), take the escalator down to the basement level as you exit the walkway from the platforms. Follow the signs to the "aldstadt" (old town). At the bottom of the escalator, stay to the right, then veer to the left when you see the bakery on the left. Walk straight, up the cobblestone pathway. At the top of the ramp, the hotel will be on your left next to the Hotel Victoria.

I have visited Nuremberg many times over the years and in the past stayed with friends on the outskirts of the city. On this occasion I stayed at the Ibis Altstadt due to its central location. Getting to the hotel from the small but functional airport is very easy. Just go to the ticket machine next to the lift outside the terminal building then go to the lower level and wait for the U-Bahn to the 'Hauptbahnhof' (The cost is 2.40 Euros - one way). When at that location just go to the 1st level and look for the sign: 'Altstadt'. Walk up the cobbled 'ramp' and look to your left. Just inside the old city walls and next to the Victoria Hotel is the Ibis.
Anyone who has stayed at an Ibis will know what to expect. The rooms are very similar, wherever one stays. The location of this particular Ibis is really perfect. There are two other Ibis in Nuremberg, however you cannot beat this location. I had a room on the 7th floor. The lifts only go to the 6th floor, so you will need to carry your suitcase the few steps to the 7th. The views from this this are really nice, with plenty of light. There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room so you might like to bring your own travel kettle. There is a coffee/tea machine in the reception area.
I found the staff polite and friendly, many thanks 'Alex'. The nice roomy breakfast area is situated on the 1st floor. It's a typical German cold breakfast, buffet style.
There is no restaurant in the hotel, however just outside on the Koenigstrasse there is plenty of choice to suite all tastes. I stayed in early September and paid about 60 Euros, that included all taxes and full breakfast. The cost obviously will vary depending on the season.
The Tourist Centre is just across the road and are very helpful. I have enjoyed many typical Bavarian/Franconian restaurants in the area, if anyone wishes to contact me I can suggest a few of my favorites. I would certainly use the Ibis Altstadt again when I return to this exciting historical and friendly city.
