“A great base for exploring Nuremberg”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2011

We arrived at the hotel in the late afternoon & even though the reception area was fairly crowded & busy, the staff kept things moving efficiently & we were soon in our room.We had booked a maisonette room & were well satisfied with that choice. The living area was spacious & well equipped with tv,cooker, fridge, microwave, sink, table, chairs, wardrobes, kettle, tea & coffee. The fridge had complimentary bottles of Becks beer & water which were topped up daily. We had a balcony with table & chairs which would no doubt,be nice in the summer but unfortunately due to the snow & cold that we arrived to,we didn't get much opportunity to enjoy it.The bathroom was a little smaller than i had expected but still adaquate enough for a weekend stay with shower, shower gel, hairdryer & plenty of towels. The sleeping area was above the living area & consisted of 2 single beds pushed together,a wardrobe & a desk. There was a sofa-bed in the living area if required.Breakfast was good & plentiful, continental buffet style with tea, coffee, juices, yoghurts, pastries, cereals, eggs, cold meats, cheese etc.We ended one night at the hotel bar & found it a good lively place to enjoy the excellent Bavarian beer & humour of the locals. The hotel has 2 lifts & a secure underground car park(charge extra)
We found all the staff to be friendly & cooperative & all spoke excellent english.

Out & about

We found the hotel to be well situated for exploring the city, located just a short, easy stroll from the old historic centre. The Planetarium was just around the corner & the old city walls, close by.We visited the Hauptmarkt where the massive Christmas Market was in full swing. The Frauenkirche & Schoner Brunner in the square were stunning. The Castle was more than worth the uphill walk to get to it as the views from it were superb. The Churches of St Lorenz & St Sebaldus were also worth spending some time at,both inside & out.If you didn't fancy walking everywhere there are a few metro stops close by to the hotel which was handy for us as we used the metro to get to Furth on the saturday night of our visit.
We spent pleasant time sampling the local brews, just around the corner from the hotel in The Kartoffel Restaurant & at Cafe Pintus & at Enchilada Mexican Bar/Restaurant & as i have already mentioned,at the hotel bar.We also visited the George Inn which was not the most welcoming or atmospheric establishment that i've ever visited & is definitely not a place i'd visit again. We had a superb meal in a newly opened restaurant, located very close to St Sebaldus Church, called Burggrafenkeller, a place i most definitely would visit again.

We booked this hotel from the venere website, after finding a special deal of approx 45 euros for a double room. At this price, I think the hotel is fantastic value, located a 5 minute walk from the underground station which takes less than 5 minutes to the heart of the city.

Whilst some of the rooms are a little dated, this is compensated by the large size and kitchen - all the rooms are more like apartments, even the single rooms. Free internet is also provided, although breakfast is a little pricey at 16 euros.

I arrived on business at midnight and realized my company had booked a really cheap hotel.

The room was like my old college dorm room, transported from the 1980s Manchester to Nuremberg.

There was a single bed (I didn't realize there were hotels that still did them). Despite a normally reliable sleeping pill and a midnight arrival it was impossible to sleep on the hard mattress with a pillow with no stuffing at all. I barely slept.

Ironically the breakfast and service were good.

Americans should beware, this is not up to US standards, it's more like a YMCA.

So I base my overall rating on the Maslow principle - although service and food was good if you can't sleep then the hotel hasn't done it's job. I ended up checking out and finding alternate lodgings.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for the open words! You are absolutely wright that first of all, a good rest is very important and that’s why you booked a room in a Hotel.
But even if you haven’t been happy with the “hardware” , we convinced you by the staff/man power. In case you'd like to give us another chance, just send us an e-mail and we will try to convince you and choose a room to the quiet garden of the Hotel Maximilian with at least a French bed.
We appreciate welcoming you again at the Hotel Maximilian!

Selecting a hotel that is not a 4 or 5 star hotel when traveling overseas can become a challenge and risk. Not here! This hotel has an excellent price point, above average customer service, nice and clean rooms, with a lot of options to store your clothes and belongings. The rooms also offer a small kitchenette, which adds even more value to the price point. The hotel is in walking distance to several good and local restaurants and supermarkets. Access to public transportation is easily available. They have parking at the hotel. The hotel also offers a breakfast option, which I did not use. They also have an onsite restaurant, which has a good looking menu. I did not eat there but a colleague told me that it was good.

Overall the hotel is very good and definitely a recommendation!!!

The location of the hotel was very convenient - about 10-15 min leisurely walk to the edge of old town. Very near a major public transport transfer point. The rooms were large (single), some have balconies. Very clean, very comfortable. They provided two free bottles of water and two free bottles of beer. Didn't try the breakfast, because it was an extra EUR16, but there are plenty of cafes in the old town for half the price. The price was excellent - EUR82/single for two nights. A definite recommendation!

I stayed in one of the Maximilian’s Maisonette Superiors from the middle of April until the middle of August 2010 (approx. four months), while on a business secondment to a factory in Nuremberg from the UK. It cost EUR60 per night, including business service. This document http://www.deraghotels.de/media/downloads/kategorie/Kategorie_MAXI_en.pdf explains the various room and apartment options. The business service included is twice weekly, you can upgrade to daily if you like.

Part way through my stay, the wireless internet provision was changed to include one hour free per room per day; this was more than adequate for me, but others will need to make their own judgements. Other charges were: 1hour – EUR2; 3hours – EUR5; 12hours – EUR12; 24hours – EUR 12; 1 week – EUR30 and 4weeks – EUR80. I didn’t encounter any problems with blocked sites, though I did notice VoIP was forbidden in the terms of use. There are some free to use city info websites and you can borrow a laptop.

The kitchenette was just that – a kitchenette not a kitchen – fridge, double hob, microwave, sink and enough of everything I needed to cook properly (given there is no oven). In hindsight, I might have benefitted from an apartment with a kitchen, for such a long stay, but that was might fault for not asking/checking.

There are communal washing machines (EUR2.00), tumble driers (EUR1.50) and iron (free); personally I had no problem with any of these. You can also ask for an iron to be bought to your room. There is also a normal hotel laundering service (at normal hotel charges), which I didn’t use.

I had no problems with control of heating or cooling (no A/C but windows open!) or road noise.

Other things you might like to know:
A shopping service is available, though I didn’t make use of this.

Two bottles of beer and two bottle of water, together with the normal brewing tackle, are included in rooms and apartments. Plus, things like, complementary ice tea in reception.

All the staff were extremely good – efficient, friendly without being overbearing and, naturally, all spoke good English. They even sent me a card and small packet of sweets on my birthday, and added a plant to my room with a label that said “You’re not alone, look after me!”.

I only used them a few times, but the restaurant and bar were both fine – nothing spectacular, but good food and drink, and sensible prices. There is a nice secluded beer garden as well. Of course, there are many and varied places to eat and drink in Nuremberg.

Gostenhof U-bahn (U1) station is a few minutes walk away and Plaraar with U-bahn (U1, 2 and 3), trams and various buses is only five or six minutes. The city centre is 20minutes or so, but you can take the U-bahn if you prefer. Free street parking is available outside the hotel, and there is a hotel garage carpark (though a fee is charged for this). There is a Lidl supermarket just across the road, which is convenient and adequate for basic shopping. Clearly, there are plenty of other places to shop in the city as well.

All in all – I was very happy satisfied with the Maximilian. It is used, for both hotel rooms and apartments by several of our customers and employees, and I not aware of any complaints; this includes customers from the Indian subcontinent who like to cater for themselves.

A little difficult to locate. The streets are very crowded and busy, but it is a city so that is to be expected. Parking was tight, but available. The hotel was very quiet and close to shopping. We ventured out to the Christmas Market, a walkable distance. The rooms were small, but adequate for our needs. Absolutely NO extras unless requested (i.e., shampoo, Q-tips, etc.) Breakfast was extra, but that could have been due to booking through hotels.com. The bed was very comfy and the bedding very nice and warm. The staff was accommodating though they weren't able to answer all our questions since we don't speak German. Not a major problem though, they were very helpful and friendly.
