“We loved our evening here - Great food and fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

We were staying at a hotel near this restaurant. It’s in a neighborhood off the beaten path for tourists so we figured it would be authentic. It was Saturday night and we did not have reservations. We were greeted quickly and after a few minutes we were told that the wait would be between two and three hours. I guess he could see the disappointment on our faces and he offered to seat us at the bar and we could have dinner there. We did and it was a fantastic German meal in a fun and lively environment. Truly German as only they know how to do it. I had the pork medallions with dumplings and my wife had wiener-schnitzel and roasted potatoes. She had chocolate dumplings for dessert. It was all prompt, delicious and plentiful. The bar staff was extremely busy but they did not forget about us and they made us feel welcome. The final check was reasonable. We paid 48 Euros for two beers for me, coffee for her, both dinners and a dessert. This is our second visit to Munich (we love the city) and now we have a new favorite restaurant.

Of course, if you offend a German (or any other country) they will quickly forget that they speak English. We did not have any language problems when greeted, from the bar staff or the local around us at the bar.

“Big disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

We were so excited about our reservation here. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, the food looked great, the staff were very helpful (we had come in the night before and made our reservation--in German!--for the next night). When we arrived, we were shown to our table right next to the door (it was -4C) and there were two people, also American, already seated there. Which was fine--they were very friendly--but the point of making a reservation was so we would have a nice, warm table, and they had told us that we'd have a seat in the back.

We ordered our meals, sipped our beers/waters (which we later learned cost 3.80 for tap water in a beer mug...the beer was 4.10), and when our food arrived it wasn't what we'd ordered (again, we'd ordered in German and she'd repeated the order back to us). The waitress was unapologetic and didn't offer to make any changes. The food was not that great, with surprisingly small portions, which helped explain the low price. All the while, the freezing air was blowing on us as the door opened and closed, in addition to a terrible draft through the window.

We are all very seasoned travelers, and ordering the wrong dish because you don't speak the language and laughing about it is part of the experience, but in this case it was their mistake and there was no offer to do anything to fix it. It was also disappointing to make reservations and end up sitting in a spot that was clearly designed for walk-ins. Being charged as much as a beer for the tap water put us over the top.

The bathrooms, however, are amazing.

“WOW!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

We arrived in time for our booked table, the food is phenomenal, the service is truely Bavarian, all smiles and cheer. It was truely memorable.

I would say booking is a must as it is very busy with locals. Some of the larger dishes particularly the desert are announced by a huge cowbell and all the staff accompanying the desert.

“Excellent food and great service”

Delicious selection of Bavarian dishes, and generous servings, at reasonable prices. Visited for dinner, booked via email to ensure we had a table.

“Excellent Bavarian Food, Good Service, Reasonable Prices”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

Wow! We had a fabulous meal here. Large restaurant with cozy, Bavarian atmosphere, courteous and relatively speedy (for Germany) service by waitresses in traditional Bavarian garb, really good food and reasonable prices.

The German menu is written in a fun, folksy way. They also have menus in English, but you may have to do some pointing, as not all of the servers speak fluent English. The portions are huge, so you can get a lot of food for 14-16 Euros. There are entrees in the 10-12 Euro range as well. They also have a children's menu, but only in German.

I had a mixed plate with duck, a pork dish, knödeln and red cabbage with apples. The duck was tender and all of it was delicious. My husband had a soup and leberkäs with sauerkraut (not my favorite, but he liked it). My daughter had the schnitzel, one of my boys had a pork dish with knödeln, and my other son had a vegetarian pasta dish from the adult menu. All of us left happy and full.

I was very impressed that the waitress brought everything relatively quickly, given that it was a Saturday night and the place was packed. She was also helpful in making some recommendations for us when we had trouble deciding. At the end of the meal, she brought each of my children an apple. That may have been a special thing because it was close to Christmas.

I should also mention that this place had some of the nicest bathrooms we have seen in Munich.

This restaurant is a little off the beaten path, but an easy walk from the Deutsches Museum, the Hilton Munich City and the Lichtspiele theater, which plays movies in English. I think it is an easy walk from both the Deutsches Museum or Rosenheimer metro stops.
