“Good food in at a nice place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

We have chosen this place, because it was not directly in the city. Very clean and spacious and the menu is typical for a place like this. The service was good and the food tasty. No question about the beer, it was great.

“Go here during the Starkbierzeit !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

A nice Biergarten and big Restaurant bavarian style.

As with all Biergartens in Bavaria you can bring your own food !! You only have to buy the dinks here.

Just like the city itself, (Munich = München = Mönche = Monks) Munich’s Starkbier tradition started with monks. An old tradition.
They created the “Flüssiges Brot” (liquid bread = Beer) as it helped them survive their 40 days of Lent fasting with full bellies and good spirits. Bavarian rulers began joining in the tapping of the first Starkbier kegs in the early 1700s and the first public beer festival was in 1751.

An integral part of the Starkbierfest is the comedic Derblecken which takes place at Nockherberg a day before the main party starts. It’s a chance for the city’s wits to poke fun at local politicians, and mildly insult others by not mentioning them at all. You need a reservation for that happening and it is only fun if you know local politics.
You'll notice that Paulaner's Festsaal (festival hall) at Nockherberg is quite new despite all that history. That's because the old Nockherberg burned down in 1999 in Munich's most ruinous fire in decades.

The beer during that time comes in the regular (yes it is regular here!) 1 liter muggs. Be aware, it is almost as strong as red wine! So when you are on your second mugg, be sure to have a good, sober friend around to bring you home.

That is why only go with public transport. or say goodbye to your drivers license.

Great also on a hot sunny day. Just sit in the Biergarten and talk to locals about what to do next.

“A great summertime biergarten”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

If you like Paulaner beer, this is a must visit. I try to visit whenever I'm in Munich, especially during the warmer months. It is located on the premises of the Hacker-Pschorr brewery and has an enormous Biergarten that is great during the day or evening. The Wirsthaus is also excellent if the Biergarten is closed. They serve all the Paulaner beers that are available around the world plus one that is only available at this location - Nockherberg. Their food is quite good as well.

“good beer good food good times”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

Came out here on a frosty december lunchtime. Entering the huge beerhall I was impressed with how cosy it seemed even though the room is huge,Good beer, the Nockerberg is really good but plenty of choice available. The menu has all the usual German standards but some surprises are also on offer, when we were there goose liver in port was a special dish.
Great service too made this a very pleasant lunchtime.
