“too much pretending”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

first of all this hotel is really gorgeous, loved the heated bath room floor, products and the breakfast buffet with silver cuttlery etc. however, some staff members are really snotty or extremely artificial and more polite to men since they seem to hold the check book, so that was annoying. charging € 20 for internet per day - also annoying, so was the poor mattress and a water kettle from china that was a real safety hazard. good location, beautiful spa but not very functional. if you look for a place that makes you feel posh this is the place to be, otherwise you could do better

Dear Guest,

First of all we would like to thank you for your honest feedback and the time you took to share your impressions on tripadvisor.com.

It is nice to hear that you loved our focus on high quality design and products as well as our fine selected variety of our breakfast buffet. We are also glad, that you could enjoy some of our hotel facilities such as our 800 m² The Charles SPA with its 5 treatment rooms, sauna, steam bath, 15 meter pool and well-equipped gym. However it is a pity that our individual and cordial service did not meet your expectations. Usually we provide the same attention to detail, exceptional levels of comfort and personal service for which the Rocco Forte Hotels and “the art of simple luxury” have become so well known. We would be more than delighted to convince you at future stays!

We understand your wish to have free internet access, but currently we are working with a very good external company, which guarantees us a safe and quick internet and a 24 hours support for all our guests. Please be ensured that we are trying to find a solution for the future and in the meanwhile I really do hope for your understanding in this point.

We wish you a pleasant year 2013 and we would be very delighted to welcome you to
The Charles Hotel soon again.

If there is anything to make your next stay even more enjoyable, please do not hesitate to contact us personally at anytime (mun-executive@roccofortehotels.com).

I have been many times in munchen and in 2011 and 2012 Istay at charles hotel. i have been 6 times in this hotel, and i stay 3-4 days every time. It is an expensive hotel but it is very nice. big rooms, some of them with nice view, marble bathrooms, very nice beds and pillows and nice decoration. the breacfast also it is very nice at davero restaurant which is really preatty. most of people are really kind . but last time i was there at 7th of december,it happend something that it wasnot kind at all. i was at the bar and i want to drink a glass of wine and to listen to the live music. closed to me was sitting a man who was speaking to his mobile for 20'.after i learned that he was one of the food managers of the hotel. i told him that i could not relax and listen to the music because i was listening what was he talking about to the mobile. he asked me sorry and he told me to treat me my wine. the other day, when i had chec out, they asked me to pay 20 euros for the glass of the wine which manager told me that he offers me ! I have pay a lot of money so many days i have stay in charles hotel. but this time i felt very bad after this. also , i was there again at 9th of november and the bathroom had a problem with hot and cold water. i asked to go the technical when i was for breakfast and when i returned to my room the housekeeping told me that the problem it is in every room. to the reception they told me other opinions ! anyway, i have been also i rocco fprte at brussells , amigo hotel and in franfurt at villa kennedy. i go with my husbentor alone . i like 5 star hotels, and i want to feel happy when i pay so much money.

I just returned from the Rocco Forte Charles Hotel and I am still amazed. This is exactly how a deluxe 5* hotel should be to satisfy even the most discerning guest. All staff members had been extremely friendly and helpful without being snotty (unfortunately an attitude not uncommon in other Munich top hotels). Everything was perfect starting from the wonderful rooms up to the great pool and wellness area. I would love to stay here very time when in Munich but unfortunately it does not come cheap. Highly recommend even for the most critical and discerning guest. You will not leave disappointed.

Room Tip: Rooms on a higher floor facing the Old Botanical Garden offer the best views and are quieter.

We stayed here for 5 nights over Christmas and would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a luxurious, relaxing stay in a wonderful city.
We do not usually write reviews but, given how wonderful our stay was, we thought we would.
I had a read a review before staying here that had said the breakfast was disappointing but, having had breakfast in the restaurant for 5 days, I could not disagree more.
The selection at breakfast was plentiful and varied and was all delicious. We tried the pancakes, waffles as well as other freshly made dishes. Varieties of coffee are available on request.
We made full use of the large breakfast and only had to eat lunch once in the 5 days!
The spa is wonderful and free to use for guests. We made use of the sauna, steam room and pool and the relaxation room is wonderful.
This was prefect for us because the shops and bars were closed on Christmas eve so it gave us the opportunity to relax in both the spa and in the spacious rooms with the huge beds and the wonderfully soft pillows. Our room overlooked the park and we had a juliette balcony.
We ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was perfect. I can highly recommend the steak with chips and the chocolate cake was just wonderful, as was the cheese and everything else we had the pleasure of eating.
Finally, the staff in this hotel are fantastic. All of the staff we spoke to spoke fluent English, which was perfect for us given our limited German.
Checking in and out were easy. At check in we were presented with a hot towel, which was unexpected but was a lovely touch that made you feel that you were in a very lovely place immediately.
The location is only a few minutes walk from the shops and about 10 to Marienplatz if you want to see the carillion at the Rathaus. Everything in the centre is within walking distance and, if you want to do a sightseeing tour, the starting point is just across the road from the hotel. It is 20 euros for 3 tours all day or 25 euros for a 2 day ticket. Good value if you want to visit the castle or Olympic park, which we did.
We cannot really rate this hotel any higher. It was a perfect stay for a wonderful Christmas in a wonderful city and we would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: I can't imagine any of the rooms here are bad. But our room had a juliette balcony that overlook...

Dear Guest,

Above all we would like to thank you for your great review and the time you took to share your impressions on tripadvisor.com.

We are more than delighted to hear that you had a wonderful stay during the Christmas season at our property. It is great that not only our luxurious breakfast buffet but also our 800m2 spa area fully met your expectations.

Thank you so much for highlighting our fantastic staff. Of course we forwarded your kind words immediately to our employees, which is much appreciated. Especially our Executive Chef, Giovanni Russo, is very proud due to your amazing feedback regarding our restaurant food.

Another big advantage of The Charles Hotel is its great location. Our guests have the opportunity to explore the most beautiful city of Bavaria and its shopping district in a very comfortable way as it is only a short walk to the Munich Central Station. Furthermore you can take a break from everyday life and you can experience the harmony of simple luxury in the Old Botanical Garden.

We would like to thank you again for your amazing review, which makes us very proud. Furthermore we would be very delighted to welcome you at The Charles Hotel soon again.

If there is anything to make your next stay even more enjoyable, please do not hesitate to contact us personally at anytime (mun-executive@roccofortehotels.com.)

An amazing stay. We stayed there over the Christmas weekend. Wow. The place where everyone knows your name. We felt very special. Beautiful property, quiet residential area, but only a 10-minute walk from the main pedestrian streets. Great breakfast. The thing that we will remember most: the incredible staff. Everyone!! They are the kind of staff that make you want to return to the hotel every time you visit Munich. Even the team at the beautiful and sophisticated lobby bar were amazing. Case in point: I asked for an obscure beer the first night, which they didn't offer. They apologized, allowed me to try samples of the beer that they did serve. The next night, in our room, was an ice bucket with 4 large bottles of my requested brew, with a note thanking us for our visit to their bar and wishing us a merry Christmas, hand-signed by every bar staff member. Truly amazing.

Three of us decided to escape family Christmas and go somewhere else, where Christmas would still be real and celebrated but out of the ordinary for us. We selected Munich. After all, Bavarians practically invented Christmas as we know it. Tannenbaumsa are everywhere!
After much comparison of hotels, we selected Rocco Forte's The Charles, and a good choice it was too.
The Charles is only about 5 years old, and is just inside the Museum District of the city, and a 5 minute walk from the Old City itself. The hotel has excellent amenities - indoor pool, sauna, steam room, and an excellent gym, and a Spa for massages and various treatments. The hotel restaurant Davvero is Italian in specialty and supplied us with luscious Tuscan beef and white truffles. Breakfast is either á la carte, or from a cornucopia of food at the buffet, which I used daily. One of us chose to request poached eggs, but had to send them back 3 times. Stick to the buffet and you can't go wrong.
Our room was on the 7th floor and had a beautiful view of the old city of Munich, and its church towers and the Alps beyond. The room was large enough for the two of us who shared to feel comfortable, with a desk, a sofa, and a separate small table and an allocation for 3 mobile devices on the WiFi (there is a weekly or daily charge). There was a large tub and roomy shower in the bathroom, with a separate toilet and bidet behind another door. Towels and linens were of the highest quality.
Most impressive was the staff, who always remembered our names and were truly friendly and helpful. The breakfast staff in the dining room, the restaurant manager, Jugen and Heidi at the concierge desk -- all made our stay easy.
If I have any criticism it is that the heated floors in the bathroom warmed the room to such an extent that we kept our windows ajar constantly (granted, it was unseasonably warm in Munich). Also, perhaps due to a law in Munich 2cls for a glass of wine is really quite skimpy. Better to order a bottle and just relax.
Would we return? Oh yes! I have stayed at 3 other luxury hotels in Munich, and I rate this one at the top for true value and experience.
This hotel is not for those seeking a bargain, but if you use the search engines you might be surprised to find good deals even here. There were many families staying here, and lots of children because it was Christmastime.
We were not disappointed!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view of the city. The location is quiet, except for the sound of morning birds.

If one were to concoct a mental image of ones perfect city hotel - The Charles Hotel in Munich would surely fulfil the most discerning criteria and likely surpass it. Our room ( on the 7th floor ) had an enchanting view over the adjacent park and nearby churches, the beds & pillows were so comfortable it was akin to sleeping on a fluffy cloud and NOTHING we asked for - be that a birthday cake or anything else - was too much trouble for any of the unfailingly not merely polite, but equally friendly, staff. From reception to housekeeping to concierge, everyone was a laudable example of their profession.

We enjoyed several delicious, flawless dinners at the restauraunt ( featuring equally charming serving staff) and a few expertly mixed nightcap cocktails at the bar - dreamy.

I am actually trying to come up with some "flaw" to make this review sound less than a PR statement, but I honestly can't. I have no idea who runs this hotel....but whoever it is should be cloned and/or hold training seminars for other 5* hotel managers. Who could learn a LOT. Well done The Charles Hotel - we greatly appreciated your hospitality!
