Three of us decided to escape family Christmas and go somewhere else, where Christmas would still be real and celebrated but out of the ordinary for us. We selected Munich. After all, Bavarians practically invented Christmas as we know it. Tannenbaumsa are everywhere!
After much comparison of hotels, we selected Rocco Forte's The Charles, and a good choice it was too.
The Charles is only about 5 years old, and is just inside the Museum District of the city, and a 5 minute walk from the Old City itself. The hotel has excellent amenities - indoor pool, sauna, steam room, and an excellent gym, and a Spa for massages and various treatments. The hotel restaurant Davvero is Italian in specialty and supplied us with luscious Tuscan beef and white truffles. Breakfast is either á la carte, or from a cornucopia of food at the buffet, which I used daily. One of us chose to request poached eggs, but had to send them back 3 times. Stick to the buffet and you can't go wrong.
Our room was on the 7th floor and had a beautiful view of the old city of Munich, and its church towers and the Alps beyond. The room was large enough for the two of us who shared to feel comfortable, with a desk, a sofa, and a separate small table and an allocation for 3 mobile devices on the WiFi (there is a weekly or daily charge). There was a large tub and roomy shower in the bathroom, with a separate toilet and bidet behind another door. Towels and linens were of the highest quality.
Most impressive was the staff, who always remembered our names and were truly friendly and helpful. The breakfast staff in the dining room, the restaurant manager, Jugen and Heidi at the concierge desk -- all made our stay easy.
If I have any criticism it is that the heated floors in the bathroom warmed the room to such an extent that we kept our windows ajar constantly (granted, it was unseasonably warm in Munich). Also, perhaps due to a law in Munich 2cls for a glass of wine is really quite skimpy. Better to order a bottle and just relax.
Would we return? Oh yes! I have stayed at 3 other luxury hotels in Munich, and I rate this one at the top for true value and experience.
This hotel is not for those seeking a bargain, but if you use the search engines you might be surprised to find good deals even here. There were many families staying here, and lots of children because it was Christmastime.
We were not disappointed!
