“Tiny but great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2014

This hotel was very nice. The location was such that you could access Old Town Munich within minutes on foot. The hotel itself was tiny and the streets were a little noisy, but the staff was very accommodating.

They are friendly, well located, nice rooms, good free breakfast and recently underwent a remodel as well as a new elevator. What more could you possibly want? They are just a few steps away from the Viktualienmarkt which is just a few steps away from the Marienplatz.

We have been reading the review on TripAdvisor before we booked this hotel, and we were glad that except for a few minor setbacks, it didn't totally disappoint.

We booked about four months in advance and requested for a room facing the street -- sadly wasn't granted. We got a tiny room facing the courtyard instead. It was not too bad however so we didn't complain. Although most of their rooms are small and basic, they were clean. (Surprisingly there were two flying insects -mosquitoes?- in our room though, and it was winter too.)

The location -- the best there is. A few mins walk from the always 'happening' Marienplatz, this hotel is tucked at the corner of quiet Utzschneiderstrasse and Reichenbachstrasse. The Viktualienmarkt nearby is most convenient -- fresh pretzels, sausages, fruits, and such. The closest convenience store is Tengelmann at Gartnerplatz. Firi, the girl at the reception was very friendly and gave us a quick run-down of the hotel's surrounding streets.

We arrived in Munich around noon, and had to leave our bags and luggages at the reception since our room hasn't been vacated/cleaned yet. We returned after about two hours and were given the keys to our room. The elevator was small but it was not an issue.

The problem we had was with the wifi. We were not the only ones with the trouble connecting. They have different wifi/routers on three floors but only one with internet. So even if you're connected to wifi there is no internet. On the first day, we called the receptionist regarding this matter and in a few mins we had internet, which lasted until evening. The next day and the rest of our stay, the only wifi with internet is the one at the lobby. (So you will see people hanging out at the lobby with their phone and tablets. Not too comfortable if you're talking to family over skype -- no one wants to be a bother and not everyone wants to hear your conversation.:)

Breakfast was included and it was gorgeous. I've never looked forward to hotel breakfasts as much as I did here! They have breads and pastries, a selection of thick creamy yogurts which I love so much, cereals, canned fruits, a selection of cold cuts -- nicer than any cold cuts I've had at other hotels, some cheeses, eggs, and raw fish (I think it was salmon). They have a good selection of tea as well but I usually had coffee and service was excellent.

They lock the main door after hours (so it did feel secure even if no one was around), but we usually returned early since the shops and markets close at 7pm. They provide you with a door code in case you come back late/ arrive late for check-in though.

I had a very nice stay in Munich but I still wish we had the street view we requested early on though.

My husband and I loved staying at Hotel am Viktualienmarkt. We stayed in the 2-room apartment on the top (4th) floor (because all other rooms were booked when we wanted to go). It was actually very nice to have the extra room. We didn't feel too cramped and since we were staying for 2 nights we could spread out a little. It had a very modern feel. Good-sized bathroom. Great windows to let air in. Breakfast was included and was really good.

The hotel is very central with quick and easy walking to Marien Platz. The Viktualienmarkt is about a block away which reminded me of a farmers market. Permanent booths set up with fresh meats, cheeses, flowers, bakery, gifts, etc. There is a biergarten there where you just grab a beer from the counter, leave your money, and find a seat amongst the many tables outside. We also got a giant pretzel :) You walk through the Viktualienmarkt to get to Marien Platz from the hotel.

Room Tip: The top floor apartment had great views from both rooms.

I've spent in this hotel a couple of nights at the beginning of June 2014. The location is great just a few steps away from Viktualien Square with nice restaurants and a great shopping area. Nevertheless the size of the bathroom is too small and also the furnitures of the room are quite old

Room Tip: Higher floors are probably better

Situated right in front of the Viktualienmarkt and a 5 minute walk to Marienplatz. Breakfast had smoked salmon, a delightful alternative to the usual cold cuts , cheese and eggs. And fresh Strawberries!! These little things come a long way and are much appreciated. Wifi, though was hard to come by. Our wifi connection came from the cupcake place beside the hotel!

As other reviewers note, the location is perfect. You have easy access to main tourist areas and there is nice restaurants and shops in the area. The hotel itself is clean but basic. The room is small but workable. Pillows awful but managed to get them changed. Our bathroom was fine in terms of size and cleanliness etc. Breakfast was adequate. I was surprised that the hotel was locked after 9pm (your room key got you access via the front door). Maybe this is a local thing but it made the hotel feel more like a B&B set up. Overall, at 330 euro for 2 nights, it did not feel like value for money. The fairness of this comment, however, needs to be considered in the context of hotel general prices in Munich, which in my experience is pretty expensive.
