We stayed in the Sofitel Munich in December 2012 so that we could visit the famous Christmas markets. The hotel itself if stunning both outside and in and the room we had was huge with everything you could ask for and more. As has been mentioned before, the bar is very popular and so it can be difficult to get a table but for me there is nothing worse than walking into an empty, soulless hotel bar so the fact that it was quite lively was a plus as far as we were concerned. The location is perfect if you are arriving by train, and indeed the train station itself is very handy for a spot of breakfast, but the immediate surrounding area is a little run down and 5-10 minutes walk from the main shopping and tourist areas. This wasn't a huge problem for us but it does stop me giving the place the full 5 stars, certainly a 5 star hotel but only a 4 star location at best unless you are a business traveller looking to jump on and off the train.
