“Good value place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

We've stayed in Thalkirchen in our VW camper on various occasions over the past few years as it is a useful stopping place on the way to all sorts of places and also I think Munich is a lovely city.

Most recently we stayed there in the summer 2012. As we have always found, the staff were helpful and polite and the cost very reasonable. In the past we have found there have been large organised groups of young people staying but even then it hasn't proved particularly noisy at night. That said we have only ever stayed in July/early August so I can't comment on how busy/noisy it may get at other times of the year.

Tokens are required for all hot water activities but toilet facilities, whilst basic, we have always found to be adequate. There is a small shop which sells fresh bread and rolls and other groceries. A bus from outside the site takes you to the metro which then takes you into the centre of town so it is easily accessible for a city of its size.

It isn't a campsite with frills but we have always found it is value for money and has a good location for visiting a great city.

I have now stayed here on both my visits to the Oktoberfest and highly recommend this campsite as a cheap alternative to staying in the over priced hotels on the outskirts of Munich around this time of year. The campsite is just a short underground journey in to the centre of Munich and has all the facilities that a good site should have hot showers, supermarket, bar etc. The surroundings are very nice and I think this would be a really good place to stay in the summer (probably a lot quieter when its not full of Oktoberfest goers). The campsite does get a bit lively Friday & Saturday night but quietens down mid week. Very mixed in terms of nationality and the bar is a really good laugh post Oktoberfest closing.

Room Tip: Buy shower tokens in advance as the que in the morning for them can be very big. Also the campsite r...

We stayed at Campinplatz Thalkirchen through our Tour Group Organiser Top Deck, for Oktoberfest.

I think if you stay there at any other time of the year you would have a completely different perspective of the camp ground - and I did wonder what the campers (who weren't attending Oktoberfest) thought of the rest of us!

The camp ground was absolutely covered in tents and campervans - there was almost no spot left untouched - I'm not sure how many of thousands there were, but there were PLENTY!

The bathroom blocks were clean enough (definitely not modern), but bring a pair of jandals/flip flops for your shower anyway. The showers took tokens for hot water - €1 for 5 mins and there are electrical points in the hand basin area.

There is a large outside bar/seating area by the reception, where you could get hot food and drink.

All in all, everything you need for a camping ground - nothing flash, but good enough.

If you don't want to be caught up in the 'excitement' of the Kiwis and Aussies celebrating Oktoberfest, I'd suggest you went at a different time.

Personally, if I was to do Oktoberfest again, I'd get a hotel closer to town - it was FREEZING at night in a tent - and I'm just not your typical outdoors type of girl. But this camp ground might be nicer during the summer when the evenings are warmer or if you stay in a camper :o)

Great location - easy public transport to city centre - also possible to walk alongside river to the centre of Munich. Lots of space to suit all sorts of campers. Toilet block busy at all times but useable and functional. Basic play area for young children next to a receptionsmall shop and restaurant. The reception staff were polite and knowledgeable and gave good advice on buying public transport tickets. enjoyed watching the locals surfing on the weir on the river next to the campsite. A great city campsite - that had a good buzz about it.
The city Zoo is nearby - train station was busy with day visitors - we didn't visit but a Dutch family staying next to us had a great day there.

Room Tip: families should avoid during Oktoberfest!

This was the worst campsite that we stayed at on our European trip.
The chemical toilet was horrible and we did not like the facilities so we opted not to use them and use the showers at our next campsite. We were only there for one night. There was plenty of space so if you need somewhere without booking in advance it is a safe bet.
The lady in the supermarket shop was really nice and helpful. The campsite is conveniently located. It only took 20 minutes to get into to Munich Marienplatz. The bus is only 5 mins drive to the metro station. It cost 9 euro 80 which you can purchase from reception and can be used for up to 5 people. You have to pay for showers. The guy at reception was grumpy so first impression was very poor.
All the suggestions for the campsites that we stayed at were based on reviews from trip advisor. This was the only one where we were not happy with our experience. That is 7 out of 7 adults did not like this campsite. We would not go back.

We tend to spend a couple of nights here on summer road trips heading east. It is a big campsite and there's always been space for our tent. I agree with other reviewers that the showers can get crowded & are a bit dirty by the morning but they are catering for a large clientele.
The surroundings are lovely - and the mood always jolly. Loud musical accompaniment to your afternoon will be provided by bands playing on the beery rafts that finish their journey down river close to the site. The U bahn is a very pleasant walk (or bus ride) away and there are good pubs / beer gardens en route. There is a little snack bar offering unhealthy treats & a mini market on site (there is a supermarket next to the U bahn station).
It is a campsite - so it can be noisy - little kids in the morning & big kids at night. Kontiki (and possibly other boozy bus tours for 18 - 30s) use the site but they seem to have a specific area to put up their tents slightly away from the main pitches so don't be put off by this.

My wife and I took a trip to Europe and one of our first stops in Europe was Oktoberfest. We rented a campervan, so booked this campsite thinking it would be nice and convenient location to Oktoberfest. What we had not fully thought out is hundreds of other campers (mostly college kids) had the same idea. We arrived late at night, and the place was already hopping from all the kids coming back from Oktoberfest (it closes at 11pm). We had just arrived that day in Frankfort from the State and drove 6 hours to Munich, so looking forward to rest so we could get an early start next morning. Umm, not happening. Campers were partying late into the night. Quieted down about 2:00am, then around 5:00am we woke up to Ace of Base blaring. We thought what are these kids doing up this early? We later would learn the reason was in order to get seats in the beer halls at Oktoberfest you have to get their first thing in the morning. I am sure this site might be nicer in offseason, but something to keep in mind if you decide to camp during Oktoberfest. Facilities were average, showers had wait since it was packed. There is a nice german restaurant down from campsite along the stream, Gasthof HInterbruhl.

Room Tip: avoid during Oktoberfest if sleep is important to you
