“Good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

We were visiting Munich for the xmas markets and so wanted a central location and this one was perfect and reasonably priced.
It's about a 15 minute walk from the main train station but we got a taxi for less than 10 Euro.We arrived at 2.00pm but there was no check in until 3.00 so we waited patiently. A lot of people seem to have left their cases and gone away. A couple entered about 15 minutes later and were ignored by the staff for a long time (very rude) but when they made a fuss were also told no check in til 3.00. To be fair at about 2.30 we were told we could go to our room (but not to tell anyone!!) but it wasn't a good start.
We were on the 5th floor at the front and noise was not an issue. The room itself was fine but in desperate need of some TLC (very dated & tired looking) and the 1 chair was stained and the towels were not fluffy (very worn and rough). The bathroom had a shower (which was very good) and toiletries were supplied. We'd asked for a double bed but it was 2 single ones pushed together with 2 single duvets! There was WIFI available but you had to pay. The TV only had a couple of English (news) channels.
Breakfast was included and was typical continental style but good of its type.

Found the hotel pretty quickly - about 10 minutes from Karlplatz Sbahn station. Reception was efficient but a bit austere. Surprised to be asked to pay in advance - I don't think I looked that scruffy or suspect! However, the hotel is well situated near the Alt Stadt and my room was fine. I think a recent re-furbishment had taken place. The room was at the back of the hotel and very quiet (as requested). Everything was very clean and the room was comfortable. The TV was modern and had many English language stations - even some of the films dubbed in German could be converted to original English by the press of a button. Breakfast was fine - quite a few choices. Perhaps my aspirations are on the low side, but I found this hotel pretty good and reasonably priced in, what is, an expensive city - one improvement could be made .....tea and coffee making facilities in the room.If you are not very mobile a nearer station than Karlplatz is Ubahn Sendliger Tor!

I am a creature of the beerhall and did the rounds. The best I found overall was one of the newest - Der Pschorr in the Viktual Markt. The beer was great - straight from the wood and the food fantastic. Do try it.

As for public transport, the tarif is quite complex. Ask at one of the many offices. I found one at Munich Airport and purchased a 7 day inner zone ticket ( zones 1-4) with an extension to and from the airport ( zones 5-16) for about €30 - just over €4 per day! This ticket is also ok on bus/trams.

If you wish to go further afield courtesy of DB this is my TOP TIP:- buy a Bayern ticket (€27 from machine or €29 from booking office. This is valid for travel throughout Bavaria from 0930 until 0300 the following morning and , I believe, good for up to 5 people. For example if you wish to go to Neuschwanstein castle near Fussen on the 0953 service from platform 29 the Bayern ticket will do it. This is a very crowded service so it is possible to buy a 1st class upgrade for €13 and travel in comfort there and back (the ticket is also valid on the bus from Fussen to the castles). The Bayern ticket is valid any time at weekends.

Enjoy your stay!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back or a quiet room.

We wanted a hotel in the Alt Stadt, so that we could walk rather than ride to the restaurants and and sights we wished to visit. But there are not many moderately priced hotels in the Alt Stadt; and the best of them were full by the time we made reservations. We did not expect much from the Herzog Wilhelm. I suppose that we got what we expected.

Good features: -
Its location has to be Herzog Wilhelm's main virtue. We were able to walk easily to everything we wanted to visit in the Alt Stadt.
Moreover, we were pleased to find that the hotel was less than 10 minutes' gentle walk -- even trundling heavy roller luggage -- from the rail station at Karls Platz.
There is a median park on Herzog-Wilhelm-Strasse at the front of the hotel, lined with horse chestnut trees from which, at the time of our visit, the leaves and "conker" nuts were falling: making for a pleasant spot to sit and relax.
We were fortunate in the location of our room, facing the inner courtyard, and therefore free from all noise except regular peels from the city's many church bells.
The breakfast buffet is fairly good, if you enjoy a German style breakfast.
There are a couple of bar-restaurants within one minute walk along Herzog-Wilhelm-Strasse.
The front desk staff proved very helpful in making an appointment for us with a nearby dentist when my son needed emergency treatment.

Bad points: -
Our bedroom was very small indeed, having barely sufficient space for our two suitcases. The twin beds were narrow and had thin mattresses: yet, to be fair, we slept well.
Our bathroom was miniscule, hardly larger than one finds on a boat. Towels were small and thin. No soap or shampoo provided.
We considered the price of our accommodation excessive in relation to what we got. At this hotel, one pays for the location, certainly not for its very limited amenities.
A small but persistent annoyance: the magnetic room keys frequently malfunction. We had to request new keys several times during our stay.
For those traveling by car, the hotel has only very limited parking availability.

Conclusion: we would not wish to stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the rear courtyard.

The entrance to the room is not the same as reception - you have to walk 5 mins and if with large suitcases that would not be a good experience.

Room was large enough but very short of facilities. Only 1 chair and a small table. No kettle and no cups, and of cos no free tea and coffee.

A bit noisy as my room was facing a main street. Had to open window as no air-con in the room.

Room Tip: Request for a room not facing the main street. You have to open windows as there is no air-con in t...

We arrived at this hotel at 12:30 after a long morning of travelling and were told we couldn't check in until 3pm. The staff at the front desk were not overly friendly and most of them left us standing waiting each time we approached the desk. Don't expect them to be overly nice to you (or anyone in Munich for that matter)
The room was fairly basic, I liked the shower, the beds were ok, not the most comfortable and the breakfast was very disappointing.
Overall you're really just paying for the location.

Warm welcome by a great staff that have allowed me an earlier check at 9h instead 15h, followed by a breakfast on the house. Adorable dinning room with great decoration and lovely vitrage. Great fresh products, large selection of beverages, especially teas. Nice rooms, central location in Munich, close to pedestrian zone and most of the attractions.

Central budget hotel. They were overbooked so the put me in their annex above an Italian restaurant. It was noisy and without air conditioning you could not close the windows. The smoke and smells from below go into the room. The good part it all ended after midnight
