There are seven floors to this older hotel.

Completely remodeled on the inside a year ago, they have thought of all of the modern amenities while maintaining a traditional feel of sorts.

The lobby is impressive and quite inviting to sit in. Elevators and staircases are marble.

The concierge, Juergen Russ, and the ladies at the check in desk are smiling and courteous.

The hallways smell oddly close and stuffy; but are nicely decorated in silk wallpaper, and softly lit, with gilt-framed prints.

Bedrooms are nicely sized, with wooden parquet floors. Heavy crown molding finishes the room's appearance nicely. Everything is immaculate.

There is an inlaid desk and matching bedside nightstands. Divided light mirrored closet doors are deep enough to accomodate a large suitcase laid flat, which is a nice touch.

There is plenty of storage, should you be staying several days.

Pale yellow wallpaper has a yellow diamond print. There are chrome accents on the lamps and door knobs and handles.

I can see the city from the windows (Be sure to ask for the 7th floor !), which are flanked by bronze silk curtains, and electronic window shades. There is a distant view of the magnificent Maximillianeum, which is stunningly lit at night.

There is a lovely glass fronted china cabinet with recessed light, a welcome change from the usual art.

There is a flat screen tv opposite the bed. A side table holds a welcome basket of fruit, a 3 layer stand of assorted gourmet chocolates, and a complimentary mini bar which holds fruit drinks, Evian water and beer.

The king-sized bed has a modern, abstract shaped headboard. There are 4 enormous pillows and a matching white duvet spread invitingly across it. Nightstands hold telephones on each side, and a pretty clock.

The mattress is hard, but the pillows are quite comfortable, either propped against your back while you sit up and read, or for sleeping.

There is a patterned rug underneath the bed, and slippers are provided in sizes for both women and men.

At evening turn down service, a single orchid flower weas placed on my pillow, and there was an unopned bottle of Evian on the nightstand, both of which are nice touches.

The marble bathroom is large, with heated floors, which are a delight in the middle of the night. There is a deep soaking tub, and separate large shower with a rain head. There is both a toilet and a bidet.

The usual amenities are provided, and replenished each day. The soap smells spicy and is nice.

Ther are big bathrobes, but they are thin and feel rough, although they are warm.

The enormous bath sheets are also thin and rough, but quite absorbent. The other towels are standard sizes, and one has a hole in it.

The desk holds an assortment of current magazines, and a welcome note on heavy card stock from both the manager as well as the front desk Manager, Kristina.

Several sheets of stationary and matching envelopes printed with the hotel's logo. Pencils without erasers are provided; but oddly enough, no pens.

The 5 star rated hotel is lovely. While expensive, everything is that is of this quality. Staying here is a wise choice.

  • Liked — recently renovated interiors, immaculate, high quality in general
  • Disliked — thin, rough towels and bathrobes. Should be softer and thicker.

Beautiful hotel, amazing service and superb location! The hotel is not too large (I think it has about 70-80 rooms). Each guest is treatied very individually. For example, we were addressed by one names during breakfast buffet. Rooms are cosy and beautiful and have the touch of what it takes to be a luxury hotel - every small detail reminds that someone has though of all possible needs that a guest may have: from the automatic bilnds (that one can open/close with a button push without getting up from the bed) to a bottle of Evian that is specially placed every evening next to bed. While one can expect certain standards in a 5 star hotel, Mandarin Oriental has not failed to include any of the possible wishes and special needs of guests. The location of the hotel is great too. It is just a few steps away from the Maximilianstrasse and Marienplatz (the very heart of Munich) and lies nonetheless in a quiet little street to avoid any morning stress of a large city. We can highly recommend this hotel for a short vacation in Munich!

What an excellent place to stay. In my opinion, this hotel has fantastic staff. very helpful, very friendly, its like taking a very comfy warm bath.

Terrific suite, details like heated floors in my bathroom. All amenities are there.
Staff makes you feel an "appreciated guest", but they never push, they are simply "there". Impressive.

Dinner at Mark's is a must. A very friendly manager, waiters that seem invisible, but very attentive. When sitting in the restaurant you can hear the live piano music from the bar below, so nice.

After dinner we decided to have our coffee in the bar, and what happens.....a tray of sweets is presented to us "with compliments from the restaurant". Wow ! Is that nice or what?

Note:
In Bavaria its not allowed to smoke in bars and restaurants anymore, so thats a negative beyond their control. A solution is on its way. The restaurant manager told us there are plans to build a smoking room, including cognac and whiskey bar and cigars for those who wish. When? We'll wait and see, but they do have serious plans.

This is a perfect example how Mandarin tackles a problem, they find solutions. And its shows in their attitude and service.

A great place to stay, I will return for sure.

Having stayed in a number of other hotels in the Mandarin Oriental chain, this hotel more than meets the high standard set by others in the chain.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights 1-4 Jan, and it was a great mini break. We'd never been to Germany before, so were unsure what to expect, but Munich is a great city with lots of amazing buildings/museums and things to do, the food is great, beer outstanding and the people very warm and friendly.

The hotel has recently been refurbished, and the rooms are quiet, warm, modern and very clean. Each room has a B & O TV and CD/DVD player, but no hairdryer!! We ate in "Marks", the hotel's restaurant, opting for the 3 course tasting menu with wine, which was fantastic.

Couldn't recommend this hotel enough for a city break, and hopefully will be back.

  • Liked — Fantastic Location and Staff
  • Disliked — No hair dryer!! (which for me isn't a big deal, but upset my wife!!!)

We stayed 4 nights at the hotel and absolutely loved it. From the beautiful room, to the friendly courteous staff, you couldn't want for anything else. The only negative I could say is that the food at the hotel is very expensive and I found there were much better places to eat very close by that were much less expensive and just as high quality. Our room was large and spacious and everyone went the extra mile to insure our comfort. The city around Xmas is wonderful with the KrisKringel festival and the street vendors. I would highly recommend Munich at Xmas time. The location of the hotel is within walking distance to all of the great shopping and a 5 minute walk to the subway station if you want to get out and explore Munich.

  • Liked — The location, service and room
  • Disliked — The sticker shock, especially the food at the hotel.
