“Great Stop”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

Residence inn

My family and I spent 4 nights in Munich at the beginning of our vacation. The rooms were comfortable, clean, and quiet. The front desk staff was friendly and helped with directions and recommendations. Generally, breakfast was quite good; we found out the hard way that large tour groups swarm in on Monday mornings...there weren't enough staff to handle the mayhem; otherwise, it was a relaxing way to start the day. The hotel is about .3 miles from the Munich Ost, which was convenient and easy to navigate. If you're looking for a comfortable hotel with modern amenities, this fits the bill.

We have found a great place to stay with enough room for a family with two teens. Includes a fantastic breakfast. .. Each unit has a small kitchen, there is a fitness center and the center of Munich is a short walk and four stops on the S Bahn. We had a wonderful break from home!

Our family of three adults shared a room for five nights here and really enjoyed it. It is an excellent choice for a short or extended stay in Munich because it is about three blocks from the Munich Ostbaunhauf (Munich East) metro rail station. From the airport, take the S8 train directly to the Ost station (about 30 minutes). We had no trouble wheeling our bags three blocks east of the station to the Residence Inn, which is joined to the Marriott Courtyard hotel. Once on the train each day, we were 5-10 minutes from every major downtown destination. First, the Residence Inn East it is a very clean, high quality property that I would categorize as upscale in the US. I'll get my ONE COMPLAINT off my chest first. The WiFi in this hotel is free, but was very frustrating. The signal in the room was very poor and repeatedly kicked our iPhones and iPads off the network. The “free” network is non-existent in the breakfast dining room but very strong next to the front desk. However, the pay version of WIFI was available everywhere and our devices were constantly trying to switch to and join that network. Pretty clever, but I think they should just put a stop to it or just charge for WIFI that works everywhere. With that said, the staff (especially Hanna, Barbara and Sam) was very customer focused and provided excellent front desk service. With five floors of rooms, I would compare this property with the larger Residence Inn - Chicago downtown. Styled like efficiency apartments, the rooms come with a comfortable queen bed for mom and dad and above average sofa bed for our tall adult son. The bathroom was excellent in design and materials and the shower was fabulous. The breakfast scenario was a real highlight of the property (included in the price of the room). The dining room on the first floor is large with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking a nicely landscaped courtyard. Very pleasant atmosphere for a morning breakfast experience and the food quality was on the level of a Marriott or Renaissance full service restaurant. We were surprised by the quality and choices of food, preparation and presentation compared to the average Residence Inn experience in the US. You won't find microwaveable pre-packaged breakfast foods, plastic cutlery, paper cups or plates here. The scrambled eggs were real (not powdered) and were prepared perfectly every day and there were plenty of meat choices, yogurt, pastries and excellent fresh fruit. There were two large self service coffee machines that could make any kind of hot beverage you could possibly want. You can understand why we skipped lunch most days. All in all, this was one of the best European hotel experiences we‘ve had and for the money, it rivals most US properties of a similar category. We took several day trips including Dachua, Salzburg and Neuschwanstein Castle and were very satisfied with our base location in Munich.

Room Tip: Rooms opposite the street side were very quiet.

This hotel is connected to the Marriott Courtyard and is only a five minute walk to the U and S stations. You can be at the Messe in less than 20 minutes, door to door, or to the plaza in less than 15 via the S trains. A full hot breakfast was included in the price which was a great start to each morning. This hotel had a true North American feel to it vs the European small rooms with minimal luxuries. I would stay here again the next time I will be in Munich.

Room Tip: Street side rooms can be noisy during daytime hours.

My other trips to Munich I have stayed at the Hilton and Marriott downtown, which I thought were great in their own way. When I come back I will be staying at the Residence Inn. The experience is different than in the States but still good. The staff was great. The hotel is within walking distance to the train station and only 3 stops to Marien Platz. There is a grocery store near the train station as well as a beer garden. This is not a tourist area which makes it even better. What the hotel does have is a very small but functional kitchen. A pretty good breakfast is included. There is not a happy hour (but the beer garden is better anyway). There are no planned free social times ( again the beer garden is better). To find the beer garden, walk across the street from the train station, towards the market. The garden is behind the market.

Easily accessable from Munich Airport, by the S 8 line, appx 30 min, tickets in main terminal approximately 10 euro for each adult, exit Munchen Ost @ Ostenbanhof, exit from the station onto Orleans Platz or Orleansstrasse, appx 3 block easy walk with suitcases. Staff do very well with English, directions, assist with booking tours. Breakfast is included, great selection, free Wifi, Gym, sauna, steam room,, showers. Room is spacious, full kitchen, refigerator, dishwasher, my favorite feature was the Nespresso coffee maker in the room ! You are 3 stops from Marieinplatz, 5 from the main train station, you can go anywhere from there. Local grocery, Lidl , is just across from the Ostebanhof, you feel like a local ! Great italian, Thai, Indian within 5 min walk, we are vegetarian and found Munich a bit difficult, lots of sausages etc, but manageable. Would stay again without hesitation.

Room Tip: We stayed on second floor, no problem with street noise.

We booked this Marriott location last minute for a weekend trip to Munich. We've stayed in two other Marriott locations in Munich and this was certainly our least favorite.
The bathroom was a logistical nightmare. The shower door had to be yanked open & when open, hung over the toilet. The door to the bathroom constantly swung shut, directly into the sink area. The small vanity mirror was gone, just a bunch of glue on a metal fixture. The room itself was as one would expect, but not as large as I think other Residence Inns are. The air in our room did not seem to work so we opened the windows, however, the noise from the street was then annoying. Turns out rooms were not cleaned on a daily basis, which was not a problem for us, however, on the day of cleaning (also our check-out day), maids tried 3 different times to access our room in a one and a half hour time-frame. All in all, we were not impressed.
