“Safe harbour in the heart of Munich East”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

I spent almost a week Residence Inn which was quite pleasant stay. I always thought about Residence Inn as a home like stay, and in fact it was that way. It is perfectly suited for extended stays especially if you prefer to cook yourself. As a part of room you will get kitchenette, quite nicely equipped (dishwasher, microwave, cooking plate, fridge ,dishes, mugs etc.).

Best part of the hotel is that it is quite new. I saw elevators dated for 2011 so building itself cannot be much older (at least it does not look like). During walk to your room you may sense its still new smell.

Location: Depending on which part of Munich you are interested in. If Ostbahnhof area is your sweet spot, no other hotel won't be better. Residence Inn is in a walking distance from Ostbahnhof - no more than 500-600 m away.

Rooms/facilities: Hotel foyer is bright and welcoming, hotel rooms are modern, nicely decorated. If you have a room from courtyard side, you will have more enjoyable view rather than from a street. You may get a room with ether shower or bathtub (which is a bit small).
Rooms are not very large, however cleverly furbished that allowed use fairly small space very efficiently (e.g. hidden in walls wardrobes with sliding doors).

Amenities: As it was mentioned in the beginning kitchenette is very conveniently equipped - you can prepare virtually any meal and then serve it easily).
Each room has built-in self programmable safe. There is also free Wi-Fi available in rooms.
Big disappointment for me was lack fully fledged recreation area. A pool is missing and gym was cramped that if there are more than 3 persons inside, you will feel very uncomfortable.

Service: Receptionists were always nice and inviting - but room service was not the utmost quality. One day I haven't received tea replenishment other day I had the feeling that floor has not been swept up.

Dining: Complimentary breakfast has a decent dishes selection and basically anybody will find something to eat. The only annoyance is the small number of seats and not very eager to clean staff during morning rush hours.
I noticed that between 7.00-7.30 it is always difficult to find a free seat (not saying about a table). In fact if the staff have responded faster with cleaning on tables which were left when customer already left, it would have changed completely the picture.

Price/Value Ratio: Price could be a bit lower (>200€), however if you take into consideration complimentary Wi-Fi and breakfast you can live with that.

Overall: I have to stay in Ostbahnhof area again, I will stay in Residence Inn.

Room Tip: Opt for courtyard view, rather than street one.

My husband, grown daughter and myself stayed for a night at the Residence Inn, since we are Marriott Platinum. Wanted to get a day's rest from the overnight flight to recover and see Munich- we had not been there before. It is very close to the train station but they need a sign to point you in the right direction when you exit the station- we had to go to ask which direction. It is brand new and we all got a kick out of the styling for the European version of the Residence Inn. Very compact compared to America, but there were cute nooks and crannies, cupboards and so forth, throughout the studio room. My daughter said it was the most comfortable pullout couch she had slept on, I doubt it had ever been used. The kitchen is very efficient - and if you put anything on top of the electric cooktop, the electric plugs and switches would not work- to remind you to be more careful. Restaurant was good, breakfast was free for us and very large. We ate dinner in the restaurant, good German food but fairly empty. Took the S Line to Marienplatz and also back and forth to the main train station. Would return there, especially if we have extra people along. Europe does not have many options for family travel.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the interior courtyard- we had one on the main road, a bit noisy but w...

I was hesitant when someone recommended this hotel an even more hesitant when we pulled up outside of it on a busy highway. My colleague couldn't get in, so she was right next door at the Courtyard. My checkin was easy enough. I was told there wasn't the typical U.S. Residence Inn afternoon manager happy hour or breakfast in the lobby; but I do get breakfast in the resturant with is between the courtyard and residence. Breakfast buffet, pretty good, no one cooking anything fresh, but scrampled eggs daily as well as the usualy other fare. There was also a self laundry on site (8 euros total washer and dryer). This hotel is pretty new and I felt as if I were the first person to step into my little apartment. It was really nice and I loved the floor to ceiling windows. I could also open it up to check how the weather was or just hang out enjoying the view. What I didn't like was even as a Planinum guest, not only did I not get a newspaper, but they wanted 3 euros for a day old USA today. Now my colleague next door, also with status, did not get breakfast included, nor would they make it part of her room charge, but they charged almost 4 euros for her to get a cup of coffee from the machine in their lobby. They did not want to give her access to the laundry facilility (but in the end and a lot of arguing, did). So there was a big difference, although she did say her room was nice. Now the location was really great. It was only 2 blocks from Munich OST and two more stations to Marienplatz. We found the most delicious italian resturant across the street from the hotel and ate there quite a few times. A great German resturant 1 block away and also a Thai resturant 2 blocks. There were grocery stores near the train station as well as a market. I highly recommend you try the Residence Inn.

This hotel was a great place to stay whilst in Munich. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and nothing was ever an effort.

The rooms were a prefect size with a wonderful bathroom.

I thought the location was great in a beautiful part of Munich. It’s about a half hour walk to the centre but when the weather is nice you get to see more of the city or 5 minutes on the train.

Breakfast was delicious also. This would be my number one choice for Munich.

I checked in on 5/24/2012 and stayed for three nights.
This place is really a good choice if you want to discover the city and located in a quite area 3 minutes walk to metro station. Station is full of restaurants and supermarket and a pharmacy is available too. Rooms size is good with a great use of space that you couldnt find it in many hotels. a small kitchenet was very convinient if you were travelling with kids. it is small but fully equipped which helped me alot. staff are helpful and friendly and i would stay here every time i go to Munich.

We recently stayed 4 nights at the Residence Inn by Marriott Munich City East and couldn't be happier with our stay. The hotel had only been open for six months and the rooms were great and the hotel staff was always helpful and friendly. A great bonus is the fact that the Ostbahnhof is only a short walk away. From there, you can get to practically anywhere in the city in minutes. The hotel breakfast was outstanding and we ate at the hotel restaurant several times at night as well. The menu can be a bit pricey, but the food is good with large portions. There's a great Italian restaurant literally around the corner that is fantastic.

We just got back from a week at the Residence Inn München and liked it very much. The RI brand has always worked well for us as a couple traveling with a small child, and this location delivered the same amenities, high quality and outstanding service we have come to appreciate. Below is an overview of the hotel and of our stay.

Location: The RI is located in the Haidhausen neighborhood on the east side of town, an easy 4- or 5-minute walk from the Ostbahnhof train station. Since the Ostbahnhof is one of the larger transport hubs, it's a snap to take the S-Bahn trains to the Marienplatz, the main Hauptbahnhof train station and other points of interest just a few stops away (the S8 line also connects to the Ostbahnhof directly from the airport, which is nice). The neighborhood is a mix of industrial and residential, with a handful of good restaurants and a market in walking distance. Even at night, it felt very safe.

Rooms/facilities: The hotel is very new and sparkling clean, decorated in a sleek, modern style. The lobby is inviting, with a spacious lounge area and a small business-center station tucked off to the side of the reception desk. Our room, on the 5th floor and overlooking a quiet central courtyard, was beautifully decorated and nicely sized, especially by European standards. Even with the sofa pulled out into a bed for our son, we had plenty of room. The design makes clever and efficient use of space, especially in the kitchenette and closets.

Although the bathroom was roomy and the shower had great water pressure, there were just a couple of considerations. The tub is deep and the threshold to climb in is very, very high, even for an adult. The shower door tended to leak a bit around the edges, so we had to be careful to spread towels down to avoid stepping into puddles. Also, there's a translucent glass panel at the end of the shower that faces the bedroom, so if you turn on the bathroom light in the middle of the night, it will shine through and might wake up those who are sleeping. It does have a dimmer that helps to alleviate the brightness.

Amenities: Our kitchenette was well equipped with an induction cooktop, dishwasher and minifridge/freezer, microwave, dishware, etc. There's an outdoor patio area in the courtyard with a grill as well. Other perks include the in-room safe, free wi-fi, a tiny minimart with a small selection of snacks, gifts and drinks, and a basement laundry area with two stackable washer/dryer units (4 euros to wash or to dry one load). Be aware that the washers and dryers are much smaller than those of us from the U.S. are used to - they hold about half the capacity of our standard ones. The dryers also aren't as powerful, so you may have to repeat the drying cycle. The hotel also offers laundry service if you don't want to do your own.

We didn't check out the fitness center, so can't speak to that.

Service: Service was top-notch. Everyone at the front desk and in the dining room was courteous, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The staff members were happy to detail train schedules and stops for us, recommend restaurants and make reservations, lend umbrellas when it rained, and more. We can't say enough about how welcome they made us feel!

Dining: Breakfast in the hotel restaurant, Max, is complimentary and the spread is much bigger than we've had in other RIs. Because the clientele is heavily American and British, they cater to all sorts of tastes. Every morning at the hot station there were scrambled and hard-boiled eggs, German weisswurst and smaller American-style breakfast sausages, bacon, baked beans, hash brown patties and grilled tomatoes. The cold stations had all kinds of pastries, soft pretzels, breads and rolls with a wide selection of jams, Nutella and spreads, as well as muesli, cornflakes, yogurts, several kinds of fruits, cheeses, cold cuts and more. We were spoiled for choice and found the quality very good.

We ate one dinner in the restaurant as well. The food was well prepared and the service was prompt and polite.

Overall, we could not have been more pleased with the hotel and would highly recommend it. If we're ever lucky enough to return to Munich, we'll definitely stay here again!
