As an American might say, this is a classy hotel. The fact that it is a well-established and family-run enterprise comes across in the elegant décor, the efficient, helpful service, the thoughtfulness and style of the room fittings and furnishings, the attention to detail and an ambience of confidence and charm.
We stayed for three nights in a Deluxe Room (402) with a small balcony that overlooked the garden. It had plenty of space for a room at this price with a separate sitting area with comfy chairs, plenty of side tables and sufficient wardrobe and shelf space. As mentioned elsewhere you get a free mini-bar stocked with a couple each of beers, Coke, fruit juices and water and packets of peanuts, which are replaced daily. There is a safe, slippers, towel robes, plenty of glasses, bottle openers, luxurious towels, and high-class toiletries. The bathroom has a marble bath with good, well-screened power-shower over it, a large shaving/makeup mirror and a proper hairdryer. There are triple curtains for those that like a blackout, flat-screen TV, free wi-fi and a nightly turn-down service. Reassuringly, the website photos are entirely representative of what we got.
A few niggles: a few more genuine, easy-going smiles at reception would be welcome; the room lighting, though extensive and flexible, is very low-powered such that reading is only comfortable when at the desk or in bed; all three of our wardrobe door handles (pull-rings) continually fell off and were replaced only to fall off again: these need to be changed throughout the hotel. Surprisingly for a 5-star hotel in Europe, the only two TV channels in English, out of over 40, were CNN and BBC World News: this too needs rectifying for the international traveller. And why only one chocolate on the bed at turndown, between two people?!
We did not try the expensive breakfast nor had dinner in the hotel. However we did have a late supper and drink in the cosy and smart bar, and as late as 22.55 on return from the ballet we could choose light meals from a fairly extensive menu.
All-in-all we much enjoyed our short stay at the Muenchen Palace. It is not cheap but it is good value – and clearly strives successfully to maintain high, well thought out standards of comfort and service. We would happily recommend it and stay there again.
