“Great biergarten in the middle of Munich”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014

Loving the biergarten experience! We were lucky too we visited on a sunny day so we just enjoyed sitting in the wooden benches, having a bratwurst and drinking good German beer. And it's bang on the centre!

“Great Biergarten”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2014 via mobile

This Biergarten is in the center of the viktualienmarkt right off the marienplatz and seems to always be bustling. They had a variety of dishes - we had weisswurst and pork sausages and sauerkraut and liked everything. They also had the best radlers that we had during our entire trip to germany and Austria. We really enjoyed our meal here and highly recommend it!

“Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

This is a must visit if you are in Munich. Hours are quite unpredictable when the weather is not good. You can buy beer and food, or, bring your own food if you wish. For ladies, you can order Radler, a mix of a Sprite-kind drink plus beer. Lovely place in the heart of town.

“Freshly cooked battered prawns”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2014

A large open air space where you find a seat and then buy drinks and food from a range of suppliers around the market - also next to a 'proper' market for other produce. We mixed sausages and the above mentioned prawns as a 'starter' before moving on to a restaurant with the prawns the best food over the weekend - plentiful, good value, hot and tasty.

“A Biergarten open in December!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2014

This is a Biergarten with an unusual history The link below takes you to some pictures: (http://www.munichbeergardens.com/Viktualienmarkt).

As Biergärten go, it’s not that outstanding, but it is convenient and it has an interesting story attached to it. Unlike most beer gardens that can trace their lineage back to before the wars, this one’s only a few decades old, having been established (or created) in 1970 while the city was preparing to host the 1972 Olympics. The land on which it sits was a turn-around station for trams, and when the stop was abolished, the question was what to do with the space (very valuable). Finally it was decided to turn it into a Biergarten, and Chestnut trees were planted and tables brought in.

This is a popular place for folks working in central Munich to take a break and have lunch (or even breakfast of Weisswurst and sweet mustard – traditionally eaten before 1200 noon). Also, unlike most Biergärten, there is not a specific brewery associated with the beer garden; instead, the major Munich breweries take turns supplying the suds. (There is a sign on the kiosk where the beer is dispensed telling you which brewery’s turn it is this week.)

Since it is so centrally located, and is mainly self-service like most Biergärten, it tends to be open whenever the weather permits, even in December! Of course, we were wearing warm coats, but we were sitting outside in a Biergarten enjoying a mug of beer a few days before Christmas, and we were by no means alone. There was quite a crowd there.
