“Not to be missed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012 via mobile

We've been there last Friday and I can honestly say it was as great as expected: the grandiose setting, the performance (La bayadere- ballet), the music!!
I would recommend though you buy the tickets ahead; try the balcony seats as u get to appreciate the stage in its unique setting!!

“Imagine You Were 'At The Opera'”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

This building and its interior fire the imagination of 'Romantic' visitors. Everything about the interior says 'quality.' However, only the performance space is Rococo. The lobby areas break it to you gently and tastefully. One can almost feel part of a privileged group of the merchants and nobility as one processes into the hallways surrounding a glass-covered inner court that lets in natural light. The walls are covered with portraits of composers and patrons (as I remember; I didn't take names.) The theater itself is a masterpiece in red and gold with perior light fixtures and about three levels of private boxes surrounding the public seating space. Its smallish space is 'intimate' by today's standards but bear in mind that this is still an active performance venue. By the way, the (free) restrooms are opulent and well worth a stop.

“A sublime Cenerentola and a fantastic English-language tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

During our July 2012 visit to Munich, we were privileged to experience a sublime presentation of Cenerentola featuring Joyce DiDonato, Lawrence Brownlee and Alessandro Corbelli. What a fantastic cast and production! Online ticket purchase for this, as well as a recital for Ms. DiDonato, was simple and efficient. However, I am glad to see the upgrade of the online purchasing to allow for seat selection.

We also took part in the English-language tour of the Opera House led by an up-and-coming soprano, Isabelle Nicolas. We were surprised to hear her French-Canadian accent, which made us feel right at home. In addition to English, she was also able to answer questions in French, for the French speakers in our group.

Isabelle's knowledge of the history of opera and the opera house was thorough, and she shared it with enthusiasm and energy. We were all excited to visit the nooks and crannies of Opera House, including the prompter's box, orchestra pit, dressing rooms, royal box and stage. Even the most experienced opera-goers of our group could not contain the excitement the tour brought them. One older gentleman in particular was nearly brought to tears while visiting these special places - and this is a gentleman who has seen Ring Cycles all over the world - but has never been in a pit or prompter's box! For €7, this tour is a bargain!

We also experienced a little of the soggy Oper für alle of Götterdämmerung. Although the evening was wet and cool, the plaza was a great place to view the opera - the screen was large and the sound was good. Security was pleasant and efficient.

Can't wait for our next visit to Munich and the Bayerische Staatsoper Opera House!

“under construction”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

This had been one of my Munich highlights when I last visited the city, but this time around it was closed for remodeling. I was, needless to say, terribly disappointed.
