“A dream come true!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

This part of Bavaria needs at least an over night stay. We took a day trip from munich which was very enjoyable but a full 2 days is what it deserves. It has a quaint little town with some cute hotels and 3 prominent castles that deserve a visit!

“An unforgettable excursion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

We booked a day excursion to Neuschwanstein Castle through Viator going by coach. Although by travelling from Munich you might think that it is a long day, that is the case but, the views that you see along the way are picture-postcard ones which we will never forget, the snow-topped mountains and log cabins with people skiing past were fantastic!

Our first stop was at Linderhof. From the coach stop, there is a slight uphill walk to the Castle. When we visited in December, it was slippery in places (as they had just had 9 inches of snow) but they had attempted to clear it in most places therefore, please ensure that you do bring good walking shoes!!

The guided tour around Linderhof Castle takes approximately 20 minutes and once over, you then walk back down the hill and have the opportunity to purchase souvenirs before boarding the coach again.

From Linderhof we journeyed on to Oberammergau. The paintings that feature on the majority of the buildings are amazing. As we did this tour on a Sunday, all but one shop was open. However, it was a large shop with an array of high quality reasonably priced goods! One person in our party bought a hat from the shop and he saw the exact same hat for sale at Neuschwanstein Castle for twice the price!! We also stopped here for a take-away drink and to use the facilities which were extremely clean and well maintained.

Upon arriving at Hohenschwangau (the small town at the foot of Neuschwanstein Castle), there is a Hotel which is the main one in the town so hard to miss and it serves food and drink and is highly recommended. The service was quick but, it did take a while to get the bill so I would recommend that at the time you order your food/drink, ask them to return with the bill at the same time they bring what you have ordered!

Once we had finished our drinks, we left and started the walk up to Neuschwanstein Castle. Our guide had given us an approximate time of how long it would take to get to the Castle (about 40 minutes walking) and emphasised that we MUST be there by the time she had stated as we had reserved 'timed' tickets and if we arrived late, we would not be allowed admission as they have strict time defined guided tours. There are horse and carriages that you can take to the Castle but these incur an additional charge and only take you ¾ of the way up so you will still have to walk the rest of the way.

We decided to walk the whole way and saw some amazing views (and took lots of photos!!). Upon reaching the foot of the Castle, there is a great viewing platform and seats where you can relax and appreciate your amazing surroundings.

Once inside the Castle, the appointed guide was very informative however, we felt that she didn't wait to ensure that all of the people in her group were in the room when she started speaking (so if you were at the back, you did miss some of what she was saying) as the tour size was very large and couldn't all fit in the same room at one time! We felt that this should have been taken in to account and the tour sizes reduced by 10 people (or so)!

You can't take photos inside the Castle but you can buy reasonably priced souvenir books that contain wonderful photos that you couldn't capture with a personal camera.

Once our tour was over, we started the walk back down to the coach. If time allows I would recommend getting a take-away drink before leaving Hohenschwangau as again it is a long journey back.

I would thoroughly recommend a visit to Neuschwanstein Castle to anyone especially if you can incorporate the other towns along the way.

Just seeing the place again from outside is exciting - it's so well known. I hadn't been there in more decades than I like to think, but on a clear, crisp Winter day, just hiking around the grounds and down below was great fun

My wife & I were on our honeymoon in May. It was a foggy day so we could see the castle from the bridge and had to be very close to the castle in order to see it. However, the interior is breath taking. The detail is so unbelievable, I can't even put it into words. This is a must see if you are in the area, you will not regret it.

“Like a fairytale :)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014

It really looks like a fairytale :)
This was one of the best parts of my trip to Bavaria! Interior is not that impressive as exterior as it isn't finished but the castle is a marvel, that you should definitely visit!
