These castles are a whole day attraction. You definetly need to plan and organize its visit well ahead. If visiting in summer, make sure you arrive atleast a couple of hours before your appointment time as there is always very huge lines to the parking lot. They are very strict with respect to the printed time on your tickets. Once you cross the long lines and park and exchange your voucher for tickets in your specified time slot, you walk a few yards to catch the bus that leads you the entrance of the hohenschwangau castle. Then you wait again for your number to be displayed on the digital board at the front.
After your visit to this castle, you pretty much have to rush to hike to the Neuschwanstein castle at the top. The hike is not very easy and might be little hard on some seniors and kids. Inspite of all these hassles, this castle is definetly worth seeing!
Dont forget to hike to the bridge on the other side for excellent postcard views
