We went to see the castle while being in Munich. The connection is really easy. You need to take a train to Fussen - it takes about 2hours and then either you take a taxi for 10 Euro to Hohenschwangau village,or you take a bus there. it takes about 10-15 min. From the village you need to climb up the castle or take horse carriage. However they are not that fast. We overtook 2 of them and we didn't walk that fast. it is said walk takes 40 min,it took us about 25.
Before you start climbing, you need to get your tickets from the office in the village.
I would advise to book in advance. we went on winter time and it was quite busy.booked tour for 11am collected tickets an hr before so plenty time to get up. I believe that on summer time is much worse.you can't miss your tour as there are automatic gates so if you will not go that's it ..
After our tour finished, about 12 when we went down to the village, the queue was really long. 2 girls told US that when they arrived at 12 they were offered a tour for 3. So I do recommend booking earlier. At 10 in the morning was no queue at all for tickets collection.
While there u need to go over the bridge - the view from there is amazing. There is only a bit of scaffolding remaining on the very bottom so can't really see it.
if you would like to eat something, better go to Fussen, more choice, not that crowdly.
