Schloss Hohenstein offers a wide range of room prices. The less expensive doubles are a good value considering the beauty of the site, its history and its architecture. Decorations overall are uninspiring and a bit out of harmony. Is this a castle hotel, or is it a flashy modern hotel? It does not succeed at being both. At the upper end of the room price scale, the value diminishes to the ordinary and is not up to the standards of many hotels in that class. Although the setting is quite impressive, something is lacking: elegance, style and good taste. We stayed in superior double and found it equal to what you expect from the better chain hotels. Had the room been offered at 109 Euros including breakfast, I would not have blinked an eye. At 85, plus 24 for breakfast for two, the breakfast seemed overpriced. Our previous evening's dining experience led us to be skeptical of the value. That meal was quite good but hugely overpriced. My rating of 5 points is based primarily on the value for what we got and the narrowness of the point rating system. On a scale of 100, it is about an 89. There are not many 100s out there.

Room Tip: Some rooms are reached via a circular tower stairway with very worn stone steps. Fun or a hazard? I...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful castle. It was a little tricky to locate - signage could be better, but we found it to be no trouble with our GPS navigation system. The driveway and entrance are spectacular, and will give you a good insight of things to come. Parking and checkin is again without signage and is a little confusing, but no real issue. Check in ran smoothly and we were shown to our room, which was a very modern and newly rennovated room in the main part of the building. It was very nicely appointed and had everything we needed, including a bar fridge. We chose not to dine for dinner or breakfast in the restaurant so I am unable to comment on those experiences. Our room had a very nice view of the distant town of Coburg (7kms away) and there was lovely leather lounge chairs in our room in which we could take in the view. All in all we enjoyed a wonderful stay, and would definitely return again if passing through the area. Well worth it!

This was our second time at the Schloss Hohenstein and we loved it both times. Five years ago we stayed in a deluxe suite and it was so memorable, we surprised my mother when she came to visit us. She also loved it - not everyone can say that they’ve stayed in a castle! We had two rooms this time (Knappen Zimmer & Kapellen Zimmer), both extremely nice. The Knappen Zimmer was decorated more modern and very tasteful. The room was bright and open – she loved the bathroom as well. Nice shower (no lip), as she is disabled and it was easy for her to get in and out of. The refrigerator was stocked and there was free bottled water on the table. Our room (Kapellen Zimmer) was a little more rustic, but also very nice. I loved it. From our windows you can look on to the grounds (beautiful) and further on, the parking area. Our room had a small kitchenette (but no plates, utensils or pots & pans to cook with – though there was a stove). Next to that was a nice bathroom, that looked to be recently updated – which also had a walk in shower, with wonderful water pressure. It took a little bit for the water to heat up, but when it did, it was hot! They also provided several small bottles of nice smelling shampoo/soap, Q-tips, lotion, shoe horn, comb and sewing kit. The TV reception was great – it was the start of the European Soccer Cup and my husband didn’t miss out.

The last time we were here, we were able to go to the top of the tower, but this time we were told it was off limits as it needs to be repaired. For the most part this castle is beautiful; the grounds are nicely maintained with lots of places to explore. There is an old church on the property – you can get the key from one of the staff to check it out. While we were there, a wedding party was going on – lots of people there the first day we arrived, but the following morning, it was just the guests that were at the hotel. We wanted to stay longer and enjoy it a while longer. You are about 6 km from Coburg, so you could tour that city too.

We had dinner and breakfast there and the meals were simply delish! I think that due to the wedding party the first night, meals were slower in getting out to us, but the following more, breakfast was fresh and fast! What we ordered for breakfast was perfect – we all had scrambled eggs with ham (speck) and there was nothing left on our plates! The b-fast buffet was great too – fresh juice and fruit. The bread selection was great, as soon as we took some rolls, they were immediately replaced. The view from the breakfast room was wonderful, one side is glass enclosed looking on the courtyard and the sun shining down – almost made you feel like you were dreaming.

After breakfast we strolled around the gardens – we had forgotten how large the property was. The old stairs, fountains, gazebo, lush trees; all made for great photos. We look forward to returning. I even recommended this place to several of my coworkers for a romantic getaway weekend or a place to take visiting family members.

Room Tip: Every room is different - great views of the castle, courtyard and grounds. It would just depend on...

NIce country location. Food in restaurant expensive, but very good. We were given modern, boring, small rooms in a separate carriage house, but got them exchanged for larger rooms in the castle proper.

Room Tip: Make sure you reserve a room in the main castle. We were given modern, boring, small rooms in a sepa...

We loved the remote location and the view as you enter the property. Our room was great for the most part. Seems like the bathrooms could be renovated, but I know there are technicalities to rennovating historical buildings. Like another reviewer, our floor was dirty, particularly the rug in our suite. I was doing my stretches and discovered just how dirty the rug was-gross! Nice to have the amenities in the bathroom and a minibar available.
After doing some exploring and dinner in Coburg, we decided we would have our final drink of the night in the hotel restaurant. We were turned away because we had not eaten dinner there! So we walked down to the wein stube (4 minute walk) and had a great time!
We did partake in breakfast since we were in a secluded area even though it was 12 Euro/person. All hot foods were made to order, good coffee, great breads and marmalades, fresh salmon...just a great breakfast! I would stay again, but with different expectations.

We stayed here as part of a family reunion. It was one the most expensive places we stayed in on this trip and it was the worst- by a long way! Our rooms was large and seemed nicely furnished on first inspection - a closer look revealled grubby, stained furniture and a dirty floor. We had no soap in our room. When I asked for some, I was given shampoo and a shrug of the shoulders. We requested two extra beds (and were charged for two) but were only given a tiny sofa barely big enough for one child.
The worst moment was at breakfast when a prostitute appeared from one of the rooms and started to make 'work calls' just beyond our table. Never had that before!

When you pay close to 200 euro you want a bit of attention and warmth. Maybe even a smile!

The grounds are lovely and the castle is impressive. If the staff were warmer and more welcoming, this could be a great place to stay. At the moment I would strongly advise avoiding this hotel at all costs.

Pay for a deluxe room with two extra beds in this hotel and you get

- terrible service - staff ignore kids, speak poor english

- hotel owner sits in the lobby and smokes & drinks with friends and treats guests poorly

- no proper extra beds - only foldable beds that tend to implode when you lie on them - be careful!

- No soap in the bathroom - no instructions for TV use

- there are no signs to the hotel despite it being in the middle of a forest

- no proper records are kept of which guests are sleeping in which rooms. We we phoned up and abused by hotel staff for an accident that did not happen in our room. The owner threatened legal action against us, he sounded like a hit man.

All in all, a german equivalent of fawlty towers. Funny to watch on TV, but nothing to be part of yourself .
