“Definitely not 4 star!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

Booked this hotel after reading the positive reviews in tripadvisor and booking.com. The fact that it was a 4 star hotel also played a major role in the decision making process. But after staying for 3 nights at this hotel, I must say that it is just an average hotel of 2 star or max 3 star quality. It doesn't have anything to qualify for a 4 star rating!! For example, our room was extremely small and it didnt had any refrigerator. The toilets were also very small. Do not understand how it got a 4 star rating! Considering the price paid for the room, I do not consider this as a value for money option. So my advice would be to book this hotel only if you get a really good price deal!

Positives: Excellent location (very close to the train station, yet safe and nice surroundings with mountain views); Excellent breakfast with wide choice of items, Very clean rooms, room for keeping the baggage and also a room for keeping ski sets

Negatives: Very small rooms (see the attached pics!), Demotivated staff (except one older lady who was at the reception during the morning shifts), wifi access restricted to one device as they give a specific username and password which cannot used in multiple devices

Having read some previous reviews I was not sure what to expect - but was very pleasantly surprised by this hotel. Firstly, reception staff were all very helpful and friendly. Admittedly the rooms were a bit on the small side but perfectly adequate for a few nights (we were there 4 nights). Rooms were clean and the beds very comfortable. The chambermaid made us smile with her bath mat creations in the shower - including boats and waves!
Breakfast was very good value and plenty of choice for everyone on the buffet style spread - including squeeze your own oranges which was a nice touch.
Location close to the railway station was very convenient for us get to Munich for a couple of days at the Oktoberfest, a day up on the Spitzberg and the free bus pass for the town offered by the hotel was great for sightseeing in general. Contrary to other reviewers we found plenty of restaurants in Garmisch and even a Greek and Asian practically next door if you couldn't be bothered to walk for 5 minutes.
All in all a good hotel, good location and fairly good value.
P.s. Top tip for travelling is the Bavaria ticket for the railway which works out at about 8.50€ pp for unlimited one day travrel anywhere on the DB network and only available from the automated ticket machines.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 3rd floor at the back facing the mountains and you can't hear the traffic...

This hotel was just about OK but it isn't somewhere I would return to. To be honest we were a little disappointed with Garmisch in general so that could be making me think the hotel was worse than it actually was but I don't think that is the case.

Initial impressions weren't good with a receptionist working behind a partition who must have known we were there but didn't come out to us. In fairness when my son rung the bell she did come straight away but I got the impression she was having a busy time and seemed to be on her own for what looked like a pretty big hotel.

As well as not taking any passport or payment details (which in fairness sped things up for us) she also failed to tell us about the parking or Internet access. When I asked about the parking I was directed to a free car park about five minutes walk away but what wasn't mentioned is that where I was already parked immediately outside the entrance was free until 0800 the next day and was just 50 cents an hour after then.

It is very well located for the train station. Close enough to be less than five minutes walk but not so close to cause a noise nuisance. It didn't seem to be near much else as when we went out in the evening we could only find a couple of restaurants that weren't in a hotel but then we were only there for one night so maybe we would have found more if we were there longer.

Out biggest disappointment was the room. We stayed in four hotels on this trip and this was the most expensive and least impressive hotel we stayed in. We booked a "large" family room that would have been average sized as a double but once the sofa bed and pull out bed were laid out (which was left for us to do) there was very little room at all and minimal space for luggage. The bathroom was also very small.

It was also incredibly hot. It was the middle of August and I accept they probably don't get many very hot days in Garmisch but this was stifling. I can't actually remember if there was AC or not but we had to leave the balcony door wide open to have any chance of sleeping which would have not been possible on the ground floor or a room without a balcony.

Breakfast was average. I think they had a large group in at the same time and a lot of these seemed slightly discourteous but the bottom line is the quality just wasn't that great. Having said that it was good enough to start us off for the day.

Some good points. The Wi-Fi was free and worked better than any other hotel we stayed at on the trip. Our room had a balcony with sun loungers and just about overlooked a fast running river which sounded lovely and relaxing in the middle of the night. We were also treated to a fantastic night sky and a meteor shower which helped make the stay feel worth it without the hotel needing to do anything.

In short this hotel was OK but I cannot recommend it. If the price is right or it's the only hotel available I wouldn't dismiss it completely but I am sure there are better hotels in Garmisch. I definitely wouldn't recommend the family room for any family of four if you're staying there for longer than one night. If we'd spent any longer than an overnight I feel we would have cancelled and looked elsewhere.

And don't forget the very cheap parking outside the hotel if you can get a space

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a balcony if staying in the Summer so as you can sleep on the sun lounger or...

The positive points:
- the hotel is very well located: near the train station (but you will not ear the trains), the bus stop to go everywhere freely in Garmisch, 5 minutes by foot to the heart of the city, 3 minutes to a LIDL shop (if you need it...)
- it is very clean
- the personnel (except at the reception - see below) is friendly and ready to help
- the breakfast is very good in quantity and quality
Now the negative points:
- the personnel at the reception desk is unfriendly at a level which is not acceptable when you work in tourism
- the rooms are noisy: if you get a room on the garden side it is noisy with traffic noises - if you get a room on the street side it is simply a nightmare
- the rooms have no air condition and no fridge: if you stay there in August (as it was our case) and the wheather is hot, nights are hard. If you are unlucky and have a room on the street side, as it is also the side exposed to sun during the afternoon, expect to sweat unless you open the window and enjoy the endless traffic noise
- the "high-speed" wi-fi connection in the room is simply a joke: it works one day on two, and when it works, be patient...
If you have no car and are looking for a hotel near to everything for one night or two, and if noise does not bother you, this hotel could be OK.

We stayed at this hotel just for a single night. As other reviewers have pointed out that the rooms were really small.

We had to wait for over 15 - 20 minutes at the reception because the individual on duty was busy on the phone while there were atleast 2 other guests besides us who were waiting for her to finish and attend to them.

Very surprisingly we were given our room keys without the individual even bothering to ask us for our id/passport or even requesting us to fill up the standard short form.

Couple of plus points - The breakfast spread was very good and it was included in our rates. The hotel is within a very short walk to the railway station.

Overall, its just good for a night or two.

upon our arrival after a long drive from italy , we were meet with a very frostey receptionist . her attituide and face were not friendly at all . she was most unhelpful , when i asked could i just leave the car in there upper car space for two minuite whilst i used the ladies room before moving it she said no .we asked her where we could park the car and she said in the underground parking for 10 euros per nite . there is as we found out later from another receptionist that you can park for free .two mins away . we waited untill 3 for our room . the room was extremly small ,after being advertised as 19 mets , the bed was set againts a wall and you had to crawl over your partner to get to the toilet in the night . no bedside cabinets as no room for them . good job we were only here for one night as no room to pass each other . possitive notes were breakfast was good ,. in our opion only good for overnight stay . didnt feel welcome atall , and we travel alot so no about hotels and there service .

In a good location near the train station and lots of nearby cheap parking. Rooms were clean but fairly small; the double bed was next to the wall so not much room for the person sleeping on the inside of the bed. The bathroom/shower was nice. Free wi-fi was available and the reception staff were helpful and friendly. The buffet breakfast (included in our room price) was very nice; lots of choice and plenty of it.
