“Cosy hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2010

The hotel is small and cosy. The room I had was very good, spacious and clean. Service was friendly. The breakfast was average.

Nice location with half way between the nearby Nato School and the city centre: 10 minutes walk to each of these.

We stayed at Hotel Arnika 3 nights on our own after being introduced to it for dinner by our Passion Paly tour company. The location is perfect for Oberammergau because it is right on the walking path and the bus road into town. It is a very quiet location. The only down side is that tour groups come here throughout the season and the menus are restricted to the few choices that the tour group has and they are expensive (27 Euros for an ordinary meal), the regular menu is not available. Don't eat lunch or dinner here and you will be very happy with your stay.

Management leaves the desk after people checkin AND NEVER RETURN FOR THE DAY OR THE NEXT MORNING.
Mgmt. takes bus tours and gives them priority over HOTEL STAYING GUESTS especially in the breakfast/dining room where bus tours get served first, they run out of food and substitute apple strudle with plain ice cream. NOTHING IS SERVED TO DRINK for dinner no water, apple juice or coffee, and 4.8 euoros for a cup of coffee with the dinner included in the room which cost the two of us over $1,000 for one night during the passion play time.
We were overcharged for everything.
The card broke in the room device that turns the lights on/off, so we could not turn off the lights. MGMT. leaves after people are checked in to never return so I had to track down a waitress, who said the cook owns the place and she'd tell him!
Grossly overcharged, and they don't care about their people.
I saw the Passion Play in 1980 and again this time, and it was great and that was 150 euros each so 300 euros just for the Passion Play - with excellent seating.

We were so excited to take my 85 and 87 year old parents back to see the passion play from 1960. A wish my parents had for years to return to Oberramergau. Our dissapointment started with a male waiter. There were two choices on the menu. We waited for a long time for the meal as we noticed others were being served first. When we got our meal the meat was so tough my father and I could not eat the meal. My sister asked the waiter if we could change the Meal to the other choice ? To our shock the waiter responded " Too late". He then walked off and ignored us the rest of the meal. My 87 year old father asked to speak to the manager about our dissatisfaction and the waiter informed us all that he was not in and would be in the next day at 11 am. The next morning we all went down to the front desk to speak to the Manager. The Manager comes out who is the cook of the hotel. We recognized him from the dinning room the night before. We asked him if he was aware of our complaint the night before from our waiter .He responded he was aware of our complaint. We asked him if this is what we should expect for treatment from now on staying there. He responded yes . We asked him if he was the owner of the hotel , he said yes. He responded I have had no complaints from others of my food or service . You should go to the tourist office for any complaints.
We walked away very disheartened to be treated this way .
Breakfast was also dissapointing in comparison with out prior travel through Germany staying at all kinds of inns and hotels. Hotel and rooms have a nice decor untill you sleep on the beds. We paid around $1200 dollars each for a 2night pkg with 1A seating. I was told by another Inn In Garmisch that you can buy an individual ticket for the play for $200 . That leaves me with $1,000 for my hotelroom (shared with my sister) and meals?................Hello!
The experience and food was unacceptable.

Big, airy room with pleasant view of mountains and meadows, good food, efficient (if somewhat dictatorial) service, very clean and new, easy walk into town. We loved it.

I agree with all that has been said by Secretshopper in a previous review. I led a church party of 28 and enjoyed our stay at the Arnika for the Passion Play. Unlike some of the earlier reviews, all went very smoothly, meals appeared on time and were very acceptable. Clearly the hotel is getting better dealing with the incessant flow of people staying for two nights and leaving. But oh it would be nice to have a smile and not to feel that you were a nusiance when you asked for service or information. They are under huge pressure but a warm welcome would improve the experience enormously.

My husband and I, along with some of our extended family stayed at Hotel Arnika while visiting Oberammergau to see the 2010 Passion Play. Our room was very clean, spacious and the bathroom had nice upgrades such as granite and a heated towel rack. We ate all of our meals at the hotel as it was included in our package and we enjoyed most of them. The service could be better but we understood they were quite busy with tourists from all over the world and the hotel was packed. If we ever return to Oberammergau we will definitely stay at Hotel Arnika. It was a nice Bavarian inn and we felt very comfortable there.
