“A pork knuckle the size of my head!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013 via mobile

I cannot fault this place except that a warning about the size of my main would have meant I would have skipped entree. My wife ordered from the "light" menu and still only ate half her meal. Terrific value, but I would recommend ordering one dish at a time.

The house beer is fantastic! I was sad I had to drive.

“Great beer and food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

We stopped here over Easter. The food was fantastic and the weissbier is very good! We were stuffed. The ambience was very warm on such a snowy day and the service superb.

“Charming and good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

I have been there twice during the last week of March 2013. Centrally located under, in the Maximilian Hotel, the decoration is very typical Bavarian and so are the waitresses/waiters. Overall good spacing between tables and reasonable noise level. The service was accurate and fast, given the type of orders we placed. The main dishes are of excellent quality and decent quantity. The desserts are very good, I had the kaiserschmarren twice and it was just perfect, both in quality and quantity. The beer is of high quality and they serve the local brew as well. I will go back if in the area.

“Excellent beer”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

Heard alot about the is place as well as the good reviews on TA. Well it did not disappoint. The bar is an impressive place and even a couple of the English lads commented on its appealing look.

The beer which is brewed on premises is some of the best in Oberammergeau. Sampled two of their home brews: the unfiltered cellar beer "Maxbrau" and the dunkel wheat beer. Both were very good with the Maxbrau being a bit sublime and the dunkel with more pronounced flavor and character. The English gents at the table enjoyed the cellar beer and I prefered the dunkel.

As for the food, my entire group enjoyed their respective meals. I started off with the "cubes of Maxbrau beer bread" - which was interesting with the side of rendered bacon fat but not an appetizer that I will order again. Main course of Maxbrau Shashlik which was impressive in presentation on a large platter. Overall enjoyable meal but the beer is the real star.

“Hearty Bavarian Fare!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Outstanding Bavarian dishes, prepared with an extra twist and flair. Many dishes incorporate beer from the in-restaurant micro-brewery! The Crusted Pig-Knuckle was a feast that almost defeated me - delicious tender pork that fell from the bone. The Bacon Platter was a mountain of thin sliced parma-ham with carraway flavoured bread and pickles - mmm! All washed down with their own wheat and dark beers. The wait staff are excellent, without being smarmy - perfect hosts.

Decor is rustic and homely. It gets busy, can be a little noisy on some nights, but having eaten here on at least five occasions is a top choice for me in Oberammergau.
