Our only regret about eating at the Flosserstuberl is that we'll probably never be able to eat there again! We're back a week now from Bavaria, and we miss many things-- with this charming place and its friendly people high on the list. We happened upon this little local place on a dark, cold, rainy night (Mittenwald is a sleeepy town, and everyone disappears from the streets once darkness falls). We were tired and hungry, and had no idea where to go. So when we spotted this place not far from our hotel, we said, "Let's give it a try." We were schnitzeled out,, so the "roast chicken" on the menu by the entrance caught our eye-- as did the very reasonable prices! Alas, when we ordered the roast chicken, the very efficient, very German waitress informed us it was impossible. Everything is cooked fresh, on the spot, so if you want chicken-- you have to give 1 1/2 hours notice! We resigned ourselves to another night of schnitzel und wurst, when she recommended (in excellent English, by the way) that she could come up with chicken cutlets... or chicken breasts in sauce... or chicken salad... or... Hurray! we cheered, and settled down to a lovely salad (right from the garden, it seemed) topped with grilled chicken breast. Delightful! "If you want roast chickem next time," our waitree told us, as thoiugh we were already oldtime regulars (as mostly everyone who comes here is) "call ahead." So we did. Two nights later. And we had a perfectly wonderful 1/2 roast chicken with mashed potatoes and salad. (We bought our own lingonberries-- closest we could find to cranberry sauce." "I have that in my kitchen upstairs,' our waitress laughed. "You didn't have to bring your own!" Then she posed for pictures to mark our last night in Germany. And we talked about her friends in the USA. And about American football teams. And we met her husband, the cook. And her daughter, who runs the place with er. And we wanted to stay in Mittenwald forever. But we could't; home beckoned. But at least we hope other Americans can now experience this wonderful hidden gem and its friendly service and delicious food.
