5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2012

Stayed at the Gasthof for one night in April - was planning on returning to Munich but it began to snow. The Gasthof is situated on the side of a hill overlooking Mittenwald. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to Innenstadt (but I had a car), and is very close to the hiking trails leading to Karstein. The room I was given was simple - furniture was plain, the bed comfortable and the TV was a 15 inch job, but who goes to the mountains to watch TV? The view overlooking a pasture was much more pleasant. Bathroom had recently been remodeled and was in excellent condition. Had dinner at the restaurant - was one of only 4 tables, but we were served in what looks like a brand new dining room with true Bavarian Gemuetlichkeit! Used the spa facilities, which included a Sauna, jacuzzi, Solarium and a "Strahlungslicht" cabinet. All were in excellent working conditions. Breakfast the next morning was lovely. Mountain view is just stunning. I noticed that there is a play yard on the property and there are farm animals for the kids to pet, so it would be good for a family. The menus and notices are in German, but the family that runs the Gasthof also speak fluent German. I am really looking forward to returning for a longer visit in October.

Room Tip: Don't bother asking for a room upgrade for free - Singles stay in singlerooms, doubles in double...

My wife and I stumbled across this hotel 7 years ago, and enjoyed it so much that we make a point to return every year.

Perched on a hilltop above the village of Mittenwald (15 minute walk down below) this hotel provides guests with scenic views of this alpine village in a valley surrounded by snow capped mountains. We recommend to reserve in advance to be sure to get a south facing room so you can enjoy this view from the balcony of your room. As well you can relax on the large terrace outside the restaurant, and spend the evening soaking in the alpine atmosphere.

The best aspect of the hotel is that it is family operated, and part of a working Alpine farm. The proprietors serve up and sell homemade jams, honey, meats, cheeses, and even distill their own schnapps! The restaurant boasts a wide variety of traditional dishes, and an incredible selection of fresh deserts. The helpful and friendly staff top it all off to make you feel at home.

The rooms are large, and comfortable, with adequate furnishing. In respect to amenities, the rooms are simply equipped, they do not have refrigerators which would be useful in the hot summer months. The rooms are not air-conditioned, but our experience is that the evenings are cool (we usually visit in July), and situated away from the roads so even with open windows you don't hear traffic.

Overall Mittenwald is a great location for day trips, within easy reach of several mountain lakes, hiking trails, and a short drive from destinations like Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Munich, Innsbruck, and the Brenner pass.

Room Tip: Ask for a South facing room to get the best views

We read previous views of the Groble-Alm (look for this name and not
Alpengasthof) so we found it above the town of Mittenwald. Your views are of the
mountains, up close and personal. The dining room and outdoor tables share the
incredible views. You can get a balcony room if you book early. The food was
very good and not expensive as a previous reviewer wrote. The host spoke
excellent English, welcomed us very warmly, and helped us plan a couple of
wonderful local hikes. In fact, Mittenwald is a hiking center with many day
hikes of all levels. I highly recommend this very special hotel for a quiet
stay in the German Alps. I'm sure the fall colors would also be spectacular.

Our family of four stayed here two nights and enjoyed the experience of being in the country in an authentic guesthouse. Rooms were clean & spacious. The clientele is a bit older and suitable for families but not really for younger people looking for nightlife. If you want a slice of German life in the country I would highly recommend staying here. Breakfast was really good, location is a little bit remote but has plenty of parking and a walk into Mittenwald only took about 15 minutes.

This hotel is above town and was a nice hike up from the train station for us though I'm sure you can catch a taxi. This was the quentessential Alpen expereince with goat bells tinking in the background, hiking trails right out the door, wildlfowers eveery where, a grat retaurant with a mullion dollar view and very popular with the locals, We even heard cockoos in the adjacent forest in the evening. We have been here twice and each time was perfect. Very attentive staff and very quiet. Room with a view is worth it - it is an incredible view! You will not want to leave. We prefer to stay a litte further from the crowd but close enough to walk everywhere- this was perfect!!

  • Liked — clean, friendly and beautiful setting
  • Disliked — Fortunately I speak German - but most staff did not speak English. Made it all hte better for us.
