“Allow enough time.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2014

There is a lot of material here. Begin with a film of contemporaries describing the effects and changes wrought by the coming of the Nazis to the Obersalzberg. Downstairs is a biographical gallery of the principle Nazi figures. Then there are extensive displays of artifacts and photographs. They are organized according to themes presenting the various cultural, sociological and political features of the Third Reich. Be sure to use an audio guide phone, as the commentary is worthwhile. Finally descend into the underground bunkers.

I agree with the reviewer who ranked this documentation center above the larger one in Nuremberg.

“Don't mention the war.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2014

We trailed round Berchtesgarden for ages looking for "The Eagle's Nest" or "Hitler's Eyre" In the end we went into the Information office and I thumbed through a guide book and discovered that it all happened at Obersalzburg which was well signposted.
We arrived at a vast and deserted car park. A shop appeared to be open and we found that this was where coaches left in summer to go up to "The Eagle's Nest"
The shop assistant told us that there was a good museum and also underground bunkers.
She was absolutely right. The museum is excellent although I had had the general history of the rise of Hitler at the Caen memorial using the same source material.
The bunkers are amazing and it would have been interesting if some of the other senior Nazi 's houses had survived.
All in all well worth a lengthy visit.

“A Frank Historical Review”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2013

We have visited the Documentation Center several times and have brought friends here also. Since the late 1970's Obersalzberg has gone through a slow transformation and has lost many of its historical landmarks. This museum preserves not only the development of the area under Hitler, but also traces the roots and history of the Holocast and how the members of Hitler's entourage were involved. DO NOT plan on a one hour stop here, but a half day at a minimum. Displays are well organized on a timeline basis, and the Audio Guide is a must if you do not speak/read German. The museum also includes part of the tunnel system which was previously only accessible through the General Walker Hotel run by the US Military.

“Don't miss this!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

We decided at the last minute to visit this museum. We had already visited the documentation center in Nuremberg a few days before, and thought this might be too repetitive. We were wrong. We all came away thinking it was better! The history was much more thorough here. We bought the audio guide and were captivated by each display. We had no idea that the best was saved for last. The Nazi bunkers were unreal. None of us knew the extend of influence Hitler and the Natzi's had in Berchtesgaden. We highly recommend this to anyone!

“history and ww2”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

The exhibition is very informative with a lot of material. Very good made you start on top and finish in the bunkers below. I mised the text in English unfortunately is only in German. By my opinion the museum is not suitable for children so they should think about and made some children playground outside where kids can wait.
