“Very good hotel near Stuttgart”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014

I stayed at the Dormero for a week of business nearby. I was in the White Wing. The room was completely fine. It was a bit sterile, but that could be the Scandinavian influence. I liked the weird lighting scheme. (You can set the lights for your mood.)

The place was clean and quiet. I don't think I heard anything from outside the room while I was there. The staff were very helpful, scanning a couple of things and then emailing them to me. The place is ideally located with restaurants in the hotel (they were OK) and across the street in a complex there. It is nearby to Kelley Barracks. Also, all of the movies and the snacks/drinks in thee mini-bar were complimentary. Not sure if that is normal or just because I'm so special. :)

My two complaints would be 1) even though it wasn't staggeringly hot, but the A/C struggled a bit to keep the place as cool as I would have liked and 2) the really nice SchwabenQuelle sauna area is not complimentary from the hotel. So, they really didn't have a sauna to use for the guest. But overall, I liked it quite a bit and would highly recommend it for travelers.

We were in Stuttgart for 2 days with the intention of going to the outlet city nearby, rather than spending any time at the city. We were not too concerned about getting a hotel based on location, just one for convenience. Dormero Hotel was listed in the outlet city’s website as a ‘partner hotel’, and I randomly picked it over the other hotels because the pictures of the rooms looked nice.

It’s a 15-minute drive from Stuttgart airport and a 15-minute drive into Stuttgart town centre, but the hotel itself is in the middle of nowhere. It’s a building within a cluster of hotels and apartment suites, an on-site casino and two theatres, showing Mamma Mia and Tarzan, the musical. Access from the basement carpark to the hotel lobby was cumbersome – there were only two entrances with tiny doors, and one of the entrances had no lift service. Very inconvenient for families who have multiple suitcases.

Check-in was smooth and painless, but the lobby and some rooms are located in separate wings – not that convenient when there are no bellboy services! The room took us by surprise – not in a good way at first. The room basically opens into an ‘open wardrobe’, i.e. a rail with no cupboard walls. The bathroom sink was actually in the bedroom, and the bathroom had only a small hand basin with a tap. It took a while to get used to this, but in the bigger scheme of things, it really wasn’t too bad.

There were some nice ‘quirks’ with the room, such as multi-coloured room lighting – with one touch of the button, you can have the room awash in green lights. Or pink. Or yellow. Or blue…! There were also two big screens on the wall – one was a TV and the other was supposed to be a computer. Except that the wireless keyboard wasn’t working, so we couldn’t turn on the computer. If we were staying for a while longer, we may have complained at reception but we were only there for a couple of days and were not that bothered. Wi-Fi was free in the room, and there were enough English language channels to keep us entertained for the little time we spent in the room. Parking however, costs 15 Euro per day with unlimited entries. Room size was comfortable for two people.

Across the road from the hotel was another theatre and a cinema (we think!) with a few eateries. The best part about that was the beer garden – superb value for food and drink. A whole roasted pork knuckle was less than 10 Euro, a pint of beer was maybe 4 Euro, depending on type of beer. If you’re the type who buys food and drinks for the room rather than use the mini bar, bad news. There are no shops around for you to do that – there was a small ice-cream shop that had a fridge, but you would have to pay 2.50 Euro for a small bottle of sparkling water.

Overall, it was an OKAY hotel stay but only because it was sunny and warm while we were there, and we weren’t in Stuttgart for long. If we had been there in the middle of winter for anything longer than 2 days, we would have been miserable – mainly due to the location. If we were to return to Stuttgart, we would probably choose to stay somewhere in the middle of the city rather than at Dormero. Not because of the hotel, but purely due to its location.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the same tower as the reception, saves you the hassle of having to trek through th...

Arrived in Stuttgart early morning and room was already available. Check-in was easy and quick. Room was very well appointed, clean, and had plenty of storage for my clothes. Rooms include a projected television as well as standard flat screen, and lots of free movies were included. The projector system included a computer with (free) internet access, and (free) wifi was available throughout the hotel, though on the main floor as you got away from the lobby the signal got very weak. No US 110 receptacles, so don't forget your Schuko adapters, though bags of them are available at the desk for free. Breakfast was excellent, though pricey. I thought it was included until I checked out and found they billed me 20 euros a day for it (WAY too high for a buffet). The minibar is included in the price, and includes a variety of water, juices, and beer, which is a great bene I haven't seen elsewhere.

There are a variety of bars and restaurants on the premises, and everything we ate/drink was very good to excellent, though expensive. I didn't utilize the gym or spa, but heard from friends that the gym is very small for a big hotel, and the spa is great. Second hand info though.

The only downside was that the a/c did not work (at all) and the room was very hot and stuffy. I alerted the front desk but the unit was not fixed. As always, i recommend you check the amenities before unpacking and ask for a move if they don't work. I didn't follow my own advice on this one!

The location is walking distance to Kelley Barracks and a short 30 minute 2-train ride to downtown Stuttgart. There is even a train station attached to the hotel.

All in all it was an excellence experience and I would return.

Room Tip: My room overlooked the autobahn, so road noise streamed in 24/7. With windows closed I couldn't...

Dormero hotels are not everyone's taste. I stayed in the one in Hannover before, and found it slightly awkward, and this applies to the Dormero Stuttgart as well. I stayed in one of the cheaper rooms in the "red" tower. Doremero-style, it was all white with the usual high-tech - two screens for movies and internet, colourful lighting to your taste. I still find this more clinical than cosy, but that's just me. The room was a good size and quiet. Small bathroom, where the supplies (condom but no shower cap ...) had not been replenished. Having read previous reviews, I was a bit worried about breakfast, but found it absolutely fine and the staff helpful. Direct access to musical theatres, casino and a marvellous spa (discount for hotel guests). Bars were overcrowded on a Saturday night. Easy connection into the city centre. All in all a good deal for a couple of nights.

Stayed on business and was pleasantly surprised. Rooms are a decent size and had a seating area. Great breakfast especially freshly squeezed orange juice! I think it's recently undergone a refurb which makes it feel bright, clean and fresh.

I was trying this hotel for the first time even though I've stayed close by.

Pros:
-- **** star standards
-- Free Internet, TV, mini bar, Gym
-- U Bahn station right behind.
-- Room is cleaned and organized daily.
-- The TV can be use to access Internet, a wireless keyboard if provided.

Neutral:
-- Friendly staff who welcomes you speaking Hindi (from a neighboring country).
-- Had a bible but was in German.

Cons:
-- No bell, need to knock to know if there is a visitor.
-- No kitchen/microwave.

Verdict: Will definitely opt for this hotel with breakfast meal.

Rooms are pretty modern with AC, big flat TV (good choice of quite new movies for free), free mini-bar and two single beds connected. No iron in the room. Breakfast is just great. I the evening you can enjoy Guiness beer in Irish pub downstairs. Highly recommended.
