We spent three sunny days in February at the Mercure Hotel Bad Cannstatt. The hotel was clean, modern and staff friendly. Booking was done via the Internet and there were no issues with the reservation. Being a bit of hotel snob, I booked the next (and only) step up from a standard room – a superior suite at Euro 161.
The room turned out to be a bit of a surprise – as there was a rather large “living room” and a rather small bedroom. It turns out the hotel typically uses these rooms for small functions – birthday parties, business receptions, etc. The large living room area was capable of seating 15 – 20 or more people for a sit-down dinner and probably twice that for stand-up cocktails.
The price and location were key in choosing this hotel – I was looking for something close to the new Mercedes Museum and perhaps a little more scenic in Bad Cannstatt than center Stuttgart. Close to the museum it was – but as far as scenery is concerned – the hotel is on a corner of a busy 2 lane main street. While good sound proofing prevented unwanted traffic noise, an ever-popular German highway rotary provided for a few looks out the window at the sounds of sudden braking. The area around the hotel is primarily residential with mostly 4 – 5 story apartment houses. The room had a balcony with an ashtray full of butts, and a wonderful view of a power plant on the banks of the near-by Neckar River.
Street cars pass directly along side the hotel with a stop (Mineralbad) a short block away. As the name implies, a mineral water bathing and spa facility was just up the street, adjacent to a large park.
Our only dining experience at the hotel was limited to breakfast – Euro 15 per person extra. Typical business hotel selections, with fresh squeezed orange juice. I did look in the restaurant the first night we arrived – only one table was occupied and I decided to look around the hotel neighborhood for other options. My search found several rustic-type, local bar/restaurants, a nice pizza/Italian place and directly across the street a Chinese/Thai restaurant. Toward the baths/street car stop was a very nice and busy bakery/pastry shop/café.
Parking is available in a garage under the hotel at Euro 10 per night.
One unexpected bonus was the arrival of professional football/soccer team Herta Berlin the night before a game with local FC Stuttgart. A number of autographed flags and pennants on the walls of the breakfast area indicate that this hotel must be frequently used by visiting sports teams. It’s not everyday you get to ride the elevator with stars of the German Bundesliega!
