“What a gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2014

We stayed here over the New Year. Couldn't ask for a better hotel nor for better service. Top rating on both counts. The hotel is professionally run but has a family hotel atmosphere.

Breakfast here is highly recommended: probably the best German-style breakfast I've had. The room we had (20) is enormous with a wonderful view over the Rhine.

Overall a wonderful experience. We'll be back.

If your interested in the formulaic chain hotel rooms and associated facilities then this hotel is not for you. If you like individuality and things a bit different then read on.

Firstly this hotel does not want you to know it's there! The only sign is some tiny letters on the door which even in the daytime is difficult to see. Your satnav should take you close and the entrance to the hotel is opposite the red DHL building. Currently the hotel building has a giant picture of two faces displayed but I'm not sure if this is temporary or not. Once you find the door just go through the curtains into the bar area and reception is on your left with a bell to call the receptionist.

My main issue is that the hotel states that parking is available "with no need to reserve". What it should say is we have just four parking bays and you can't reserve them which is an important difference. Between the DHL building and the hotel is a large open space but this is private land and parking here is at your own risk. At night and weekends I think your OK but during business hours could be a problem.

Second issue is breakfast which at 20 Euros per person is on the high side. For this I would expect a better range to be available (more cooked items, sorry I'm English!). However what is available is of a very good quality. There are a few cafes towards the centre, about 10 minutes walk, which do a better value option.

Now on to the mainly positive experience. As soon as you walk into the bar/reception you know someone has spent a lot of time and effort to create something unique and you can spend a good few minutes just taking it all in. All the staff are bright young things who greet you with a smile and seem to want to make your stay a good one. When the key card machine wouldn't play ball the receptionist walked us to our room and used her card to get entry (different can have it's problems!) which was fine.

The rooms are a nice size, done in a brutalist style using the old warehouse concrete as it's theme and it works really well. Add the battered crates as bedside tables and old extendable lights as lamps and you have a great feel to the place. Not sure how much is genuine old reclaimed industrial things but if not then the replicas have been done really well. The bathroom is in fact a shower room which is a great decision as instead of a small bath you get a very large and good shower instead. Good quality toiletries, air drier etc. Beds are large with good quality firm mattress and soft pillows. Two complimentary bottles of water still/sparkling each night make up for the lack of a mini bar and the chocs in the pillows on arrival are always a nice touch. Nice flat screen tv but with English channels limited to the BBC world service (as per most German hotels - there is an opportunity to be exploited here!) and an ipod docming station/radio as well.

We stopped Friday and Saturday nights and on our return to the hotel found the bar very very busy and as such didn't really try it out. If you like a buzz about your hotel then this will be great for you, if you like a quite nightcap before going to your room then possibly a problem. I should say our room was above the bar and we could hardly hear any noise at all.

Overall a very welcome change to the usual crowne plaza and holiday inn business hotels and recommended for anyone with a little bit of adventure left in their vanes.

Room Tip: Go for the river view as the street view is a bit depressing!

If you are looking for the typical Holiday Inn type hotel then move on, this place is not for you! This is a very stylish modern hotel that has spared no expense in design, fittings and style.
It has been developed from what must have been one of the 50s warehouses on the bank of the Rhine river. In doing this they have decided to leave parts of the old building exposed, but to very good effect. In your bedroom you will find massive concrete pillars, strange floor patterns that don't fit the room and seem to lead to doors that no longer exist. In the main bar there are big grey electrical switch boxes. All very effective and different.
The bedrooms don't have carpets. The walls are plain grey and white. There is minimal stuff around but what you do get is high quality and beautiful. There is a mixture of simple wooden items and some old fittings, such as, in our case, the bedside lights on extending frames. The bathroom we had was big, had top quality fitting and a huge shower and beautiful quality white towels, The bed, the linen and pillows were all very good and comfortable. The triple glazed window in our room was simply HUGE and had and external electric blind operated from the bedside.
The bar is great and the service is excellent. There is a good selection of quality wines, beers and more. The only food is tapas but this should be OK for most people. It is really good quality with lovely warm crusty bread. We ate there and really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food.
When we arrived, quite late, they got us checked without delay or fuss and even came outside to show me where to park. They gave us a WiFi login before we even asked for it.
Externally the building is, well, not much to look at, but then it is an old 1950s warehouse (or thereabouts). The plus point is that it sits right on the edge of the Rhine so the views across the river are fabulous, especially at night. In the summer you can sit outside the bar and take in the view.
My only complaint is that the hotel is really hard to find as it has no external signs, My SatNav got me the correct location, but in the dark I really did think I was in the middle of old warehousing. The old railway tracks, from the docks, are still in place around the hotel, which are great but it does make you wonder where you are!
I will be going back for sure as we found a real gem of a place. If you want somewhere a bit different then try this, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Room Tip: You pay more for the rooms that overlook the Rhine. The view will be good.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Speicher7. Harbour Hotel & Bar. A granary full of life. The noticeable warehouse building in the port area of Mannheim is an architectural monument from the 1950s, located directly on the bank of the River Rhine, close to the city centre, so it is possible to walk to many cultural institutions, to the University inside the Palace as well as the business centre of the metropolis of the Rhine-Neckar region. The hotel has 20 rooms and lounges, a bar in the foyer and a terrace facing the Rhine. Like-minded people meet at the bar, it is a space of encounters where time passes slowly. The terrace by the river becomes a very special sun deck during summer, where you can rediscover the water, the Rhine and the harbour.Sleep is meditation. The appeal of the rooms and lounges is created by generosity, urban flair and a casual sense of well-being. In every room, there are prominent style elements of the building that are shining in new splendour again. Some rooms can also be used as conference and meeting rooms. During renovations, the preservation of the original style elements of the building was fundamental in order to bring out the authentic charm of the harbour warehouse. The interior design was a real adventure, while random expertise has influenced the impromptu design of the Speicher7 Hotel.Speicher7. Harbour Hotel & Bar Mannheim. A new centre.
