“An old hotel with a conservative touch (being revamped)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 days ago NEW

The Leonardo Royal, together with the Maritim Parkhotel and the Dorint, is one of the leading hotels in Mannheim, all of which are within walking distance of the city center and the railway station. Until last September this hotel was the Steigenberger Mannheimer Hof, with a reputation of more than 60 years.

When you enter it, you are in a large lobby with an unobtrusive decoration and a pleasant hardwood floor, which you find everywhere in the hotel. The elevators definitely show their age, but are working properly, and having reached your room, you see the traditional character of this hotel. I wouldn’t recommend a standard single room, as they are quite small, I had a de luxe single room. It had an essentially square cross section, quite roomy dimensions, whitewashed walls without decoration, and there was a large desk with a single chair. My room was on the court side and during my whole stay there wasn’t any noise or other disturbance. This is an ideal environment if you have work to do, and I like such a simple environment, but this might not be everyone’s ideal. The bathroom is completely in grey ceramic tiles, amenities like a rainshower (over the bathtub) are all there, making for a tasteful environment, but some of the fittings also show their age.

The restaurant was very good, both for breakfast and for dinner, a music cabaret, the Schatzkistl, is a place frequently visited by people who ae not staying at the hotel.

If you are an international traveler usually staying at Hiltons or other international hotels, you should take into account that all the power outlets are of the traditional German Schuko type. Adapters for you mobile devices can be inexpensively bought at the large electrical stores in town, but you save time if you bring your own. There is free wireless internet in the rooms, which has a limited bandwidth suitable for email and scanning of the news. If you have to download large files, for 15 euros per day you can eliminate the bandwidth limit.

The Leonardo group plans to make a significant investment, which will strongly change the decoration of the hotel, giving it a lighter, more modern touch.

Room Tip: Standard single rooms are small, go for a de luxe room.

Central and convenient location right next to Wasserturm and close to inner city.
The rooms are large and clean. My room was right next to the elevator which was a bit of a bummer as there was constant noise whenever it was moving.
Breakfast is really good.
Stuff is friendly, but everything concerning the reservation is strangely complicated. In my case I arrived and left a day earlier and the modification took quite some time (with the reception desk still being very friendly).
I found the hotel a bit too pricey for what was offered.

Room Tip: Don't take a room next to the lift.

central location but room was on street side and badly isolated from the noice. I had a communicating room (door to another room) and the isolation was terrible, the person next to my room was coughing all night and everything could be heard. good wifi in the room and free.

Good hotel. Period. Breakfast is great! It offers a good variety, including Champagne. The location is the hottest point of this hotel! The access to the garage is terrible when you have luggage to carry. You need to "climb" several steps with your luggage to reach the parking area! In my opinion, I would rate this hotel as 6.9, between 0 and 10!

I had visited this hotel during a business trip. Upon arrival and after I had requested a slightly earlier check in time via e-mail before my arrival and having received an e-mail to say I would be assisted upon arrival I arrived at the hotel after almost 24 hours of travelling to be "politely" informed check in as at 2pm, I was there just after 12pm. In good German fashion they had me wait until 2pm when my room was all of a sudden ready at exactly 2pm. I had also requested a no smoking room. On arrival in my room it had stank so badly of smoke that I had to go down to reception to request a non smoking room. Guess what, had to wait another hour for a non smoking room. Other than my "lovely" check in experience I must say I have never met reception staff so unfriendly or willing to assist. Maybe I was just being sensitive after my initial experience. The lunch buffet on the Sunday and the breakfast buffet had been very middle of the road with the serving bowels always being almost empty and not topped up. Service in the restaurant was extremely slow and you had to request assistance before anyone would help you. I would suggest you give this hotel a miss and rather find something else. The rooms are nothing as alluring as they would want you to believe from their marketing material.

Room Tip: Ensure they don't put you in the rooms directly opposite the reception therefore in the back of...

The reception staff and ambience is very good but the rooms are average and more towards poor, no courtesy for luggage movement to parking or back. The GYM is horrible it has a broken treadmill ( ancient machine) a broken cross trainer and only one new cycle.... It's not good at all.... The location is very central but the hotel is average and not great....

The hotel is located about a kilometer away from the main station. You can walk it up from the station if you dont have too much luggage to carry. The nearest tram stop is Kunsthalle and from there too its a good 400 meters away on foot.

The hotel itself is quiet nice, the rooms are adequately comfortable. The breakfast is excellent with a huge spread. The hotel restaurant itself does not have too many choices. However there are many restaurants nearby.

The rooms facing the main streets are noisy so if you've a choice then take the rooms that face the inner courtyard.

Room Tip: Take the rooms facing the inner courtyard.
