“Cozy and Comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

A very cosy Hotel with several larger rooms under the roof with half-timber showing. We stayed in the “Provence” room which was large with a sitting area and a nice bathroom, updated and comfortable. There is parking in the back and you are in close walking distance to shops and restaurants of Durlach. A very nice Breakfast is included and served in the dining room, eggs to order and a nice "sweet" surprise and the end of breakfast. We peeked into the other rooms and the “Champagne” room is also a nice and large alternative. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the larger rooms.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

I stayed here for 3 nights on a business visit to Karlsruhe. Many of the standard business hotels were full and my company's local office sent me here instead. My room on the 4th floor had large old beams exposed which I found interesting. The bed was reasonably comfortable and the bathroom was large, however the shower was just a spray wand over the tub.

This property is primarily a restaurant (which had an excellent reputation locally; I was told it was one of the most expensive in Karlsruhe). There is no front desk for the hotel; it is managed out of the restaurant kitchen. Upon arrival the door was locked and I rang the bell. A nice lady came and asked my name; when I responded she gave me the keys without any further check in requirements. There was a key to the room and a key to the side door of the restaurant.

The room is more like a cosy B&B than a business hotel. Furnishings are okay. There was no clock in the room, although there is free fast wifi and a minibar.

I had breakfast in the restaurant each day. The breakfast is only for hotel guests, so I was alone or with only 1 or 2 guests each morning. It was high class and elegant, European in style. Eggs cooked to order along with cold assortments of quality meats, fruits, yogurt etc. Juice was hand squeezed. The cost was 8.5 Euro which was well worth it, added to my room bill upon checkout.

My room on the 4th floor was a bit noisy from car traffic during the day and evening, however between 10pm and 6pm it was quiet and I was able to sleep fine.

There isn't much else in the immediate neighborhood other than residential apartments and business offices. No other restaurants or shops. The center of Karlsruhe is about 3 miles away. However, there is a train station (Durlach) about 10 mins walk, which had frequent trains to the city center as well as to Karlsruhe main station for other train transfers. I took the local S4 train several times. If you get the hang of this then you can get most anywhere in 20-30 minutes door to door from the hotel. However if you relied on taxis you might have a problem because you can't easily flag one by the hotel and there isn't always a hotel receptionist on hand to call for one.

Overall I had a nice relaxing time and would be glad to stay here again.

Tip: When you are in Karlsruhe, visit Vogelbrau brewpub. There is one in Durlach and one in Karlsruhe center.

Room Tip: 4th floor was interesting but caution there are a lot of steep stairs to climb.
