“Very good middle-class family-run hotel with excellent breakfast and beds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

From the first impression of a spacious lobby with large Turkish-style carpets this comfortable hotel impressed us throughout with its quality. Rooms have a fridge and, unusually for Germany, a kettle. The larger rooms are better for two people but not necessary for single travelers. The beds are exceptional; extremely comfortable with a Lattoflex support for a good mattress.
The location is quiet, and off-street parking is available in the hotel's underground garage.
The breakfast buffet is extensive, and you could enjoy a good breakfast for a week without repetition. Ingredients are good quality, and especially the coffee impressed. Excellent value at 6 Euro.
Staff are efficient, although some have a tendency to be Germanicly stern.
There seems to be a lack of good mid-range restaurants in the area. The nearest Italian, L'Incontro, served very poor food. However, the hotel room is comfortable for a picnic, and the Italian grocery store round the corner from the high-number end of Hans-Sachs Str. has a good selection of suitable items as well as good Italian bread. Plates and cutlery were gladly supplied by the hotel.

selected based on high rating on tripadvisor & it has lived up to its rating.

HIGHS:
very near to the tram station & main market area.
modern hotel - suitable for business travelers.
good breakfast, free high speed wi-fi connectivity.

LOWS:
single rooms are tiny
tv is weirdly located & massive difficulty in viewing.
no concept of room service

would not mind staying here again!!

When driving to the hotel I thought, based on the area I went through: "OK, this has to be really good to justify its high ranking in the TripAdvisor order of merit for Karlsruhe".

The Rio turned out to be a modern hotel in which I had a really nice room with lightning fast internet (over 20 Mb/s!).

It's a hotel with an average restaurant (there was no main course without a salad from the salad bar...) which was optimized for getting food to large groups of customers and be in time for the 2nd serving of the evening.

Nevertheless, the food quality was average to good enough and the service was hasty but friendly and always correct.

All in all good value for the money I paid and a place I'll certainly won't mind to go back to next time I have to be in Karlsruhe.

Room Tip: Reserve a luxury room across the street from the main building.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2011

Stayed in Hotel Rio for 3 nights for business in September 2011. Good location, very near tram station, yet tucked away from the main road. there was a supermarket at the end of the road just 2 minutes walk. Hotel split into two buildings with a small road in between. i stayed in the main building. the reception lady was a bit cold and unfriendly; but the gentleman worked on reception desk in the evening was very friendly and helpful. the reception decor was dated. however, the room was reasonable sized, there was a electric shutter outside the window, that was fun to mess around and easy to use. it shut out the light well so can sleep even in daylight. the curtain was a tassle one, it looked modern but impractical when tried to open the window and let air in. room decor was modern, the bed was at a funny angle but worked well in room. tv located on the left side of the bed and fixed on a swivel shelf that can moved to suit wherever you are in the room, however, my neck felt funny after watching it for 20 mins on bed. free internet was good. free welcome drink in hotel bar was a very nice touch. shower room was spacious and clean. like the wet space rather a shower tray. there was sufficient wardrobe in room, free safe inside cupboard, comfortable bed, all facilities were well considered and worked well in room.
the best part was the breakfast in the morning. paid 6 euro and ate like a king. overwhelmed by how many choices are there just for sausages, must be over 10; then there were three or four ways of salmon; even the scramble egg tasted like real egg, everything was delicious and almost luxury. bear in mind even macdonald breakfast cost over 4 euro. the breakfast in hotel rio was unforgettably superb. great thumbs up to the chefs.
the bar was ok, however, there was no smoking ban indoor. it was more to do with local government regulations rather than the hotel. so be warned if you are a non smoker.
overall a great stay and would visit again.

With two teenagers, this was a first-class hotel, with fabulous modern facilities a short walk from the city centre. There are two buildings, and we stayed in the one across the road which has recently been refurbished. Access is by an electronic tag, and the rooms were spacious, with flat screen TVs and a bathroom to die for! Tasteful furnishings and excellent mattresses made for a great night's sleep. The breakfast in the main building was the best I've ever had in a hotel anywhere! Huge selection of hot and cold food from a buffet. Car parking was secure too.

Room Tip: Ask for the modern annexe across the road for the newest rooms.
