“great Malaysian food and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

High-quality tasty home-made Malaysian cuisine and very friendly staff/owner. Quite hard to get in Europe - don't mess it with Chinese!

“Thank you for a wonderful party!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2013

I've visited Serai restaurant. several times over the past 1+ year and always look forward to getting a special treat here. And indeed we were given a lovely treat when we celebrated a very wonderful party (16 pp) in the private room recently. Top scores and a BIG round of hearty applause go to the chef and Juliah for the absolutely authentic buffett spread of freshly prepared curry puffs, spring rolls, mee goreng, sambal prawns, beef rendang and chicken curry. I can't say which dish I liked best - all the sauces were perfectly simmered to a heavenly combination of texture, taste and spiciness. I've not tasted better Malaysian food in Europe! The delicious home-made mango salad dressing deserves a special mention as well :) We also loved the mango lassi (mango joghurt drink) and the teh tarik (hot sweet tea with milk), and the rounds of non-alchoholic cocktails ;) The buffet tables were lovingly decorated with beautiful batik-print table cloth and the party room exulted a nice warm ambience with the tasteful interior decor and lighting, just as in the main room of the restaurant as well. A charmingly presented dessert duet of chilli mud cake and coconut cream topped with mango sauce rounded off a perfect evening among friends.

“Excellent Malay Food in Heidelberg, Germany”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

Last night I was served a pleasant surprise in Heidelberg. Drove down to Heidelberg to have my dinner after the tourist crowd have departed. I browse the Trip Advisor and to my delight I found Serai with claims of genuine Malay food. First my search for Serai took me to the Weststadt a residential area away from the Heidelberg tourist hordes. Serai can be easily reached by the tram or if you drive street parking is available. Initial impression of Serai is modern and clean...I like it and it looks promising. I took a seat alfresco though it was beautiful inside to enjoy the summer evening. Mentioned I was Malaysian and soon after Juliah Rais-Morres the owner came to chat with me. Found out she was a landscape architect by profession and that explains the nice design of the restaurant. She's been many years in Germany and this new restaurant is a new venture open a year ago. Now the food, I ordered Beef Rendang as it is the ultimate challenge for the Malay Restaurant. And start off with a nice local craft beer instead of the usual Teh Tarik which I reserved for dessert. The Daschenfranz Kellerbier was really good, glad I chose it. it was fresh, flavorful aroma and no after taste. The presentation of the Beef Rendang was very nice, so time to try it. The bite of the meat was tender (good quality of meat was used) and the Rendang was made Minangkabau style. You can taste the spice but not overpowering. I found out that the cook was a sous chef at a 5 star hotel in Malaysia. Overall the food was very good with a nice decor. Friendly owner who will be happy to chat with. I will drive again 90km to come to Serai. Highly recommend to homesick Malaysian or Singaporean or Indonesian living in Germany or tourist who comes to highly popular Heidelberg. For Europeans and others, the mild but flavorful food here will also delightfully teast your palate, give it a try, you will love this Malay restaurant. Congratulations Julia on this lovely restaurant.
