“Out of centre hotel, with variable rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2009

This hotel is sited on a main route out of town. We were unlucky in having a room facing onto this street, directly above a tram stop (and one tram line runs through the night), so open windows meant a lot of noise. Other rooms would presumably be quieter, though in the back building there is no lift and access to the upper floors is via fire escape stairs.

We also disliked the beds, with their lumpy mattresses - too soft for my back. There is no free internet access for guests, so your best value here is at the station (50 cents for 4 minutes).
Otherwise rooms were clean and spacious, with a good powerful shower. Breakfast was very good and plentiful, with delicious German rolls, yoghurt, etc. Staff were efficient and quite friendly, but note that the reception is not staffed after 7 or 8 in the evening. Three tram routes offer quick access to the city.
Overall we thought the beds, lack of internet and noise disturbance outweighed the good aspects, so next time I would probably stay elsewhere.

My family of four stayed at the Hotel Elen to break up our drive to Switzerland. We booked the day we arrived using the tourist bureau in downtown. The price was right and we got a small family suite on the top floor of the building. Unfortunately there was no elevator but we managed with our heavy luggage anyway. Also we had to park across the street taking care not to park in the bus loading zone.

Breakfast was fabulous and included in the price. The staff was friendly and the hotel clean. I would recommend this hotel if the lack of elevators and hotel parking are not an issue.

We stayed for two nights at the Hotel Elen. One condition of booking was a secure car parking space. There were only four spaces in the courtyard without room to turn around and we found that we had made the mistake of parking the car facing the wrong way; it is a requirement that cars are reversed out of the narrow entrance. across a busy footpath and into both car and tram traffic. The gate is closed at 8pm which means that your car is either locked in or out after that time.
We had a "quiet" room at the back of the courtyard but the noise from the tram line was still loud. The access to the rooms on the two upper floors is by an external metal spiral staircase - very noisy and difficult to carry suitcases up and down.
The room was only of adequate size, without airconditioning and it's location in a hot courtyard meant that there was no air movement to cool it at night.
Our second day coincided with a local holiday; the cleaning staff also took a holiday so the room was untouched.
We found that the old part of Handschuhsheim, about ten minutes walk away was very pleasant with at least three good restaurants for an evening meal.
