I always find the Ibis rooms very functional, albeit with a small but functional bathroom. This hotel was no exception, but our room was comfortable and had a "5 star" bed which was really comfortable.

Location is OK with trams from the adjacent station (Hbf) into the centre for just over 1€. You can also walk to Bismark Platz in 15min. The low cost of the hotel easily supports the small amount of extra cost on either taxi's (10-12€ to centre) or trams.

Some noise from station (especially in the back of the hotel, odd number rooms) but this is limited if you keep the windows closed.

Per other comments, Ibis is reliable, comfortable and clean with helpful, friendly staff. Great public transport infrastructure with train/tram/bus, but not too far to walk anywhere either. Used the Zaptor bar/cafe next door for breakfast - very good; also fun bar in evening. All goes quiet on Sunday, but we found Merlin bar while walking to town for fantastic breakfast (like we needed more food!). For posh dinner, highly recommend Weisser Bock. For beer and great pub food - The White Swan in the High Street. Found the prices in Heidelberg very reasonable for Europe.

Room Tip: Traffic at the front, trains to the back. I sleep with window open and managed to sleep through, but...

Conveniently next to the station - we weren't disturbed by noise from the station with the window closed. Breakfast buffet was good. Room was the usualreliable Ibis standard - not large but clean and functional, with comfortable bed.

The tourist information office is also right outside the station, and it's easy to catch trams or buses just a few stops into the historic part of town.

The Ibis Hotel is like the European version of Holiday Inn. It's not a luxury hotel, but it's everything you need. It's comfortable, the staff is SUPER nice and helpful, and it's by far the best value in most European cities. Unless it's a special occasion, we always go for the best deal. When it comes to price and value, this hotel is by far the best (we almost always stay in Ibis or Etap when we travel in Europe on business).

Ibis is conveniently located a short 1 minute walk from the Heidelberg Main Station (Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof) and this makes it SO easy to get to Mannheim, Ludwigshafen, and all over Heidelberg, of course. People that complain about the train noise must be sleeping with the windows open. We were on the 3rd floor and heard nothing unless we opened the windows.

Breakfast is 10 euro per person and given that McDonald's is right next door, Burger King, a bakery, and Thai place are in the train station, we didn't see the point of buying any food at the hotel, but it was nice that there was a minimal room service (wurst with fries, soups, fruit cups, chocolate cake, and drinks) available 24 hours a day. Breakfast is available starting at 6am, so if you're looking for an early start, you can get that.

The bus is a short block or so away from the hotel, and for 2 euros you can go to the shopping center (where you'll find hat/scarf sets for 2 euro at Woolworth's amongst other things, lots of restaurants, a H&M, I think I saw - many shops) and then just a stop or two later, there is the cable car up to the Heidelberg Castle. For 5 euro per person, you take the cable car up to the castle, entry is included (the castle itself wasn't spectacular, but the view is, and they do offer a wine tasting for an additional 7 euro per person, which was nice), and the return trip back to the bus stop is included.

Be aware that there are a LOT of tourists that go to the castle in droves on buses. If you really want to enjoy a leisurely look around the castle, make plenty of time to work through the crowds (which disappear almost as quickly as they arrive, but many come and go). It seemed that no one was particularly interested in the wine tasting, but photo ops would have been difficult if we hadn't had the time to wait for the people to go, but the tourists were all super nice and were also willing to help us take photos. :)

For a romantic trip, this hotel isn't really it, but for value and money, it def is. We were in town to see a doctor, so Heidelberg was just a day trip for us. Plenty of hot water to shower, very clean, a comfortable bed, a helpful staff, and a very convenient location that made it easy to get to a clinic in Ludwigshafen (15 mins by train), Mannheim (10 min or less by train), and the castle (10 min or less by bus) were the most important factors for us.

Fyi - the hotel staff speaks plenty of English. Elsewhere? Not so much. It is very helpful if you know how to ask for directions, ask shops/vendors if they take visa (most do not - castle and large fast food chains do), which stop is the castle/zoo, etc, order food, and, of course, say please and thank you in German. My German is very basic, but I found my trip to be much less stressful since I speak enough to get around.

Also, all of the nicer hotels were a short 2-5 minute bus ride from the main train station, and buses/trains arrive/depart often, so you never have to wait very long. If you are considering another hotel, but you are concerned about the 5 kilometers by bus being stressful (given that we were only staying 1 night, we didn't want to take even 1 bus upon arrival after a 5 hour trip - ha!), it won't be. The public transport in Heidelberg and surrounding areas is excellent, albeit a bit crowded at peak times.

Room Tip: I think higher floors are less likely to hear noise from the train station.

A good place to stay, not too expensive and at the doors of the Heidelberg train station. The breakfast was a correct buffet (salt and sweet) and the room was clean. Overall, a good quality/price rate.
