“Great atmosphere, but average food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

We had lunch in the oldest restaurant of the town, the only one which survived destruction at the end of the 17th century. The atmosphere was very pleasant and impressive, and also the service was impeccable. We ordered aspargus with ham for lunch and were a bit disappointed, as some of the aspargus served whole were more al dente than soft boiled. The wine selection is great and the recommended white wine was delicious. We had probably expected a bit too much from this restaurant which is also mentioned in the Guide Michelin. Still, if you want to get classic German food, you might enjoy the place, but there are better restaurants to be found in Heidelberg.

“Old School German”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

This is one of the oldest, most historic restaurants in Heidelberg, being about 250 years old. The building dates back to about 1592. So it is worth it to dine here for the history as much as anything. The food is classic German. The service is very professional. The atmosphere is classic as well. Nothing trendy at all about this place. We enjoyed our lunch, and ordered from the daily specials list. It was about 10 Euros apiece, quite a bargain compared with the regular menu, where most items were at least twice as expensive.
It wasn't our best meal in Heidelberg, but we enjoyed the food, and especially the fact that we were dining inside one of Heidelberg's oldest historic buildings.

“Great service although our expectations on the food weren't fully met.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

We went there for Christmas Eve. The waiter serving us was really wonderful and nice. The food though was not that much to our liking. We probably expected too much from this restaurant, but there are other better choices out there that gives better value for money.

“Good traditional German food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012

This was a very good restaurant. Was there last week and it's asparagus season so there are a number of dishes. The asparagus soup was loved by everyone at our table. There are plenty of fish and beef options and were enjoyed by everyone. Location is nice too!

“Good quality food where you can sit on the main cathedral square”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2011

High quality restaurant with interesting menu covering local cuisine. Large interior but we sat on tables outside on the main square of Heidelberg. Very good food - the cranberry sauce on the venison is great. Very attentive waiter always happy to help.
