Booking was made for 3 nights. We arrived on a Saturday when the hotel was hosting a wedding so there were no evening meal or bar facilities available. Our rooms were clean if a little spartan but comfortable enough and they had heeded the request for a ground floor room for my Mother in Law who cannot manage a lot of stairs. The rooms were set in houses which were numbered and accessible from the main facilities by a covered walk way.
We were out and about during the days so the place seemed ideal for our requirements being in the area of the Black Forest which we wanted to explore.
The hotel is used as a retreat for the Pforzhiem Church and we didn't know that we would be the only guests staying independent of the church groups. In the summer the bar/cafe is not open for guests, despite there being opening times listed in the room, and it was an extreme hassle getting anything cold to drink at the end of a busy day when you just want to relax and unwind with a drink. There were vending machines but unless you like Coke, Fizzy Water or Apple juice (which I don't) there was nothing else available. Also the restaurant was not available for evening meals despite opening times being listed on our booking confirmation. There is nothing to do there in the evening.
On the Monday the hotel was full of teenagers attending the retreat which made it difficult to relax in any public areas. Don't get me wrong, the teenagers were very polite and no problem but there was just so many of them and their groups did make a lot of noise. We found ourselves having to retire to our rooms just after 9.00pm just to get peace to read our books.
We were booked in for B&B but apart from the first morning (when some wedding guests had stayed over) there was no hot option on the buffet breakfast or any pastries - breakfast was pretty much cereal or a cheese/ham roll.
All the information in the public areas was in German with no English translations visible but the staff were very friendly and did their best to assist with our various questions.
On checking out we did raise our issues with the manager, especially about our difficulty to get a drink in the evening, and he was extremely sympathetic and helpful. In fact all the staff were lovely, dealing with our limited understanding of German with unwavering cheerfulness - except for one who is impossible to miss.
It wasn't really a negative experience but I don't think we would return again, especially over the summer, but mainly as it isn't the place for us.
