“Dificult to communicate”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2014

The hotefl is in a beautifll building (needs a bit of care outside), the interior is really beautiful.
The room is OK, very clean. The bed is good. The courtains dont lock the lights so you wakeup with the sun. The main thing is that almost anyone in the hotel reception, in the restaurant, anywhere, speak other language than German !! We were anable to get simple informations ( it was a mimic session), so we did not get informations about the city or even the hotel facilities -- it is a spa in the black forest, because of the language dificulty. Even the restaurant menu is completely is german. The fire instructions .. in german. Every thing was in german. The internet only reaches the first floor. We were at the second floor and asked to move to the first floor to have internet signal. The staff even not speaking other than german are nice and try hard to understand you.

A blast from the past - this converted hospital hasn't been updated recently! We stayed for a couple of nights hoping for a little luxury. Instead we were amongst people of a certain age who were on a half board holiday, in a hotel that is dated.

Breakfast was excellent - lots of choice and plentiful. Service at check in was very helpful. Location is great for exploring the Black Forest.

Internet access is by requested ticket, one per device, but OK in the rooms. Evening meal - well, the restaurant was full of the half boarders, so we had a drink in the bar - empty and little atmosphere!

Walk into town for some lovely restaurants and bars with a bit more life.

For the money we paid (even through a discount web site) we expected a bit more luxury, a little more atmosphere, a few more facilities.

So on Friday here's me looking forward to my first ever Spa-experience. Me, who's used to roughing it in Youth Hostels and tents and is NOT in any way fussy.
And on Sunday here's me, on the day of the check-out of a supposedly 4**** Hotel, holding on to my last shred of good manners and nerves.

My best friend and I had booked ourselves into this place on - just like many others - the picturesque character and the hotel's comfy atmosphere. Included in the deal were the usual: a bottle of sparkling in the room, a welcome drink, a 3-course-meal, a massage and breakfast as well as free Internet and usage of the spa facilities.

Cutting a long story a bit shorter:
We never got a welcome drink, nor a bottle of sparkling (you can imagine our disappointment - 2 girls ready for a giggly weekend and no sparkling anywhere in sight?). So, off to the bar! It appears we got lucky as the bartender knew what he was doing and was very friendly. Not impressed with having to shout at my best friend over the incredible noise level in that room - I hadn't seen her in 6 months and wanted to tell her all about the innermost ongoings of my life...but felt like if I told her everyone in a 5k radius would be able to hear me as well. Next morning we asked to sort out our massage appointment and were told in an "Oh, that"-manner that it had already been booked for us, that no other appointments were available and that we couldn't move the appointment to another time (thank God we were both in such a good mood that day, so we scheduled our visit into town around the spa's agenda...but seriously, here's a sentence you shouldn't have to say about a 4**** Hotel).

The walk into town was nice, Freudenstadt itself is a typical Black Forest town with lovely flower arrangements in the summer.

Upon return to the Hotel we were looking forward to a few rounds in the pool and some quiet time in the chill out area. Nope: Pool completely full, children jumping in from the sides, all chairs taken and again, the noise levels were equivalent to those at a rock concert.
My massage lady was lovely and very friendly; my friend's request if hers could apply a bit more pressure was denied with the words "This is not a proper massage, it is only a treatment." That understandably put her off the whole Spa experience and hadn't it been for the free fruit and tea I think she may have walked out that afternoon and camped in the car.
The 3 course dinner was okay; portions were rather small and whilst the waitress was very friendly she frequently forgot our drink orders ("You said you wanted the red Spaeburgunder?" - "Err, no. The Riesling."). A wine that was sent back because it had a rather metallic taste was still put on the bill. Again, not 4**** standard.
We didn't fancy yelling at each other that night so did not frequent the bar again.

Check-out the next morning was what almost made me lose my composure. We had, in the queue before us, witnessed several accounts of things that had gone wrong during their stay - the statements ranged from disgruntled to outright angry and appalled. The reaction they got was one of blatant indifference. When it was my turn I mentioned our disappointment with the service and that we had neither received the welcome drink nor the bottle of sparkling. The receptionist's reply was "Well, that's not our fault." Luckily my friend knows what the veins in my neck normally look like and that their unhealthy shade of purple did not bode well for the lady behind the counter; she took over and quite matter-of-factly informed the receptionist that we would accept the bottle now, thank you.

We left the Hotel, door being held open by a portier who seemed to want to compensate the incompetence of the rest of the team by thanking us for allowing him to hold the door open (anytime, my friend), with a bottle of sparkling and in the sure knowlege that this Hotel, as beautifully as it stands there in the gorgeous region of the Black Forest, would never see either of us or any of our extensive family and friends ever again.

I recommend staying in a family run B&B which are usually cosy and "closer" to the culture anyway, and where you will not have to worry about restraining yourself from throwing big objects to get rid of your frustration.

We did, however, enjoy that bottle of sparkling. At the train station.

Room Tip: Room choice? I recommend camping in the nearby forest. Much less hassle.

The hotel is gorgeous. The breakfast buffet was varied and always replenished. We had a superior double room but it was quite small. Instead of a double bed, we had 2 singles. The spa was very relaxing and we had a good time. The hotel and surroundings are very picturesque. Very close to the Marktplatz, 10 minute walk.

Where to start...we arrived at reception to spot they had a porter trolley so asked if they could bring our bags up. The girl looked taken aback and said "Well we could or YOU could take them". Slightly bemused, we asked if there was a porter to which she said yes. "So can the porter bring them?" "Oh, yes, I suppose". We wondered why the trolley if they didn't do that service. Next, the porter arrives with bags dressed in shorts, t-shirt, sporting many tattoos, skinhead and looking rather menacing (we weren't sure if they'd grabbed him from the street to help). I used the ironing service for a linen dress which was returned folded which sort of defeated the object. The decor looks 30 years old and I think that was the last time anyone had any customer service training. We felt we were in the Twilight Zone and fully expected to see Basil Fawlty appear around the corner. I'm amazed the place is still running but it's probably due to the lack of decent hotels in the Black Forest. We were doing a tour and stayed in some much nicer places that were actually cheaper. Don't say you haven't been warned, you'd be better off in a tent.

The hotel has a bit of the old world charm that represents it's long history. The rooms were clean, historically appropriate to the building and comfortable. They featured high ceilings and tall windows with nice views to the front of the building. The location is residential but easily walkable (5-7 mins) to the downtown area of Freudenstadt. The included breakfasts were great, with lots of options that helped start off our days.
The staff were nice to us at checkin/checkout, and while they were able to accomodate our lack of German speaking skills, I got the sense the majority of their clientele were German.
The health spa/pool was very clean and well equipped.
Overall we had a great stay with them and in the town of Freudenstadt.

I stayed here for 5 nights on a business trip. We arrived late on the Sunday and found the bar was closed. The spa is being renovated and we were not informed of this prior to arrival. On Monday night the bar was also closed and we were told it would be open on Tuesday, it was, but it closed early...
Rooms are nice although the bathrooms are compact. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the continental breakfast was great.
The walk in to town takes 5 - 10 mins and there are a great number of restaurants to choose from. The Brauhaus is a great place with a good atmosphere.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front have a great view, but you can hear the traffic. Rooms at the rear are quiet...
