“Historical hotel, with good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012

We were happy to stay in this hotel for three nights. We arrived out of reception hours, but that did not seem to problem at all. No problems with parking which was free of charge. Location is good, with walking distance(~5-7 minutes) from city center. Hotel was very quiet even though there was local festival weekend ongoing. Rooms were very clean, and at least our suites were actually quite big with two rooms. Breakfast was served in restaurant, and it gave us very good starting point for each day. We visited also several times in Spa area, which was clean and luxurious.

Hotel has a house computer for visitor use, which was working fine. And lobby area was covered with free WiFi-connection. Rooms did not have free internet connection(only with wire and extra cost) which was slight disappointment, even though it was clearly mentioned in hotel description. However during our trip we noticed that also other German hotels we stayed had a same policy concerning internet access.

All in all we were happy to stay there during our stay. I recommend this hotel while visiting in Freudenstadt.

Arrived without a reservation and were fortunate to get one of the last rooms. Our room was one of the smallest ones, with a miniature bath, but we were only staying for one night so it wasn't a huge issue. Our room was quiet and clean, with a comfortable bed and lovely linens, carefully selected furniture including a small dressing table and chair, and room to open luggage. The hotel is delightful and reminded us of one of the old, luxurious, Canadian railroad hotels. The Palmenwald has obviously been lovingly restored.

There were delightful public rooms to enjoy a drink, a good book or conversation, and even a piano for public use. We loved the ambiance and decor, and felt we were part of an earlier, more civilized time, but with modern amenities. We didn't have dinner there, but did enjoy the delicious breakfast. Due to time constraints, we did not try the spa.

Staff was friendly and helpful, particularly the young woman who was a fairly new employee. She showed us our room so we could make a decision whether or not to stay and was open and fun to chat with. Only staff niggle was at checkout which took way too long because of some issue with the woman ahead of us. There was just one person staffing the desk at the busiest check out time.

We couldn't get the house computer to work, but there was free WiFi for our laptop. Parking was also free right in front of the hotel. Location is about 6 to 8 blocks to the town center, so we just left our car parked and enjoyed the exercise.

Wonderful hotel where you can see how the details matter. Sekt (German sparkling wine) was offered at check-in. My suite was small but to risk a pun sweet. TV's in the living and bed rooms, soaking tub, separate shower and heated floors in the bath. The desk clerk provided me with an ethernet cable (the wifi doesn't reach reliably to the 3rd or 4th floors) and when I asked for a plug converter they had one.

The food is great and a bonus when I told them in very broken German I was allergic to bread they brought me fresh baked gluten free bread and it was the best gluten free bread I've ever tasted, light and airy not heavy and thick. And unlike some other reviewers I don't think €36 for a three course dinner, with sparkling water and a glass of Italian Montepulciano is expensive, I think it's a bargain. The breakfast buffet (included in my €99/night suite rate) had the creamiest scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, a large assortment of fresh bread (I didn't check or ask for any gluten free) plus the standard European buffet items, yogurt, assorted meats, cheeses, jams, three kinds of honey and more.

The spa area is again small but very well organized with changing rooms, showers near the pool, sauna, steam and ice rooms.

I'll definitely stay again. The only cons were not too much parking, though I always found a spot in front and not great sound insulation which could be a problem on the first floor near the bar or the second floor near the beer garten in the summer.

Room Tip: Pay the extra €7-12 for a suite, I peeked in a regular room while walking buy the maid and it was ti...

Very average hotel, not worth suffering any case in a 4 star.
The staff is absolutely not friendly, the rooms are very small, the bathrooms are very small style is outdated.
The evening meal is very expensive and you have nothing on your plate!
I absolutely do not recommend this hotel, it is too expensive and not worth 4 stars!

I would agree with all the previous positive comments.

The dinner we had "à la carte" was excellent and not too expensive.

The room and the SPA are a little small but over all very nicely done and enjoyable.

Breakfast is very good and staff is very present and nice.

If you go there, don't miss to walk up the hill behind the hotel where there is a sublime view and very nice forest.

Perfect place for relaxation!

Stayed here for 3 nights, a bargain through Expedia! We booked a suite which was situated at the front of the hotel and most importantly it had a really comfortable bed!
We made full use of the pool and wellness area which were really good. The breakfasts were excellent with plenty of choice and we decided to eat in the restaurant on our last night. We were very impressed with our meal even if it was a little on the expensive side when you added the wine etc to the total. An old style traditional hotel but with modern facilities. We would stay here again without hesitation.

A lot a money has been invested in this hotel and it shows, the furnishings and the structure are top quality, the dining room is very grand. And the staff are well-trained too.

The only negative for us was the half-board evening meal which at €75 for two with wine was very expensive.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the hotel there is no view at the back.
