“An interesting experience....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2008

I stayed here for one night due to a late flight arrival, then took the train out mid-day the following day. Bus transportation from the Karlsruhe-Baden airport to downtown Baden-Baden was easy. The instructions and maps on the Sunshine web site weren't so easy to understand. I found the large city tourist maps on display near the bus stop in downtown Baden-Baden easier to use for locating the street Sunshine is located on. The bar referenced on the Sunshine web site isn't across the street or next door to the B&B. There is a small market across the street from the bar, and then you have to turn right next to the tiny market and then Sunshine is up a small sloped road at the end of the road (where it comes to a T). It took me a little while to figure this out. Sunshine is very casual about reservations/check-in. I told them I'd be arriving around 8:30 p.m., and they gave me a code for a lock box and told me to leave my money for the room in the lock box the next morning -- how trusting! I stayed in a dorm-style room (six beds, one bath, kitchen, dining). It said non-smoking on the door, but the Spaniards sharing the room with me were obviously smoking most of the time. I alerted the owner of Sunshine the next day. She was very kind on e-mail throughout our communication. The room was no-frills but clean, simple. Good price. Bed was comfortable. There were towels and sheets. It's about a 10-minute walk to the famous bathhouses. It's a 15-minute cab ride to the train station. I probably wouldn't stay here again just because the check-in was so lax. It would be nice to have someone around to take your money or deal with problems like smokers. It seemed strange to me that no one was even there at 8:30 a.m. to check me out.

My husband and I (age 27 and 31)stayed at the Sunshine Apartments for a long weekend. Now, we are not fancy posh people and we usually stay in 2 or 3 star hotels and our motto is 'as long as it is clean, en suite, and has hot water'.

Well, the Sunshine Apartments are none of the above.

Our bedding had hair on it when we checked in.

Our toilet was not en suite and it smelled like a public men's room.

Our 'shower' was this stall installation right in the middle of the bedroom. (Not in a separate bathroom). You had to turn the hot water on in advance (not a good sign) and when you took a shower the hot water only lasted about 3 minutes maximum with no pressure. This is highly unpleasant after coming back from a day of swimming at the thermal baths or after a night of sleep on filthy sheets.

There was also a basin in the room that only had ice cold water. This made brushing your teeth a nasty chore.

The only saving grace of the Sunshine Apartments is that it is located right in the city center (a few minutes walk from Leopold Platz). We paid about 53 Euros per night and this is about the cheapest you can get in the center of Baden Baden.

Next time we will spring for something better.

The Sunshine Apartments is a great place to stay if you want to be in the centre of Baden Baden. Don't stay here if you have a car though - the car park is large enough for only 3 cars and the alley to access the car park is only 6 inches wider than a standard car. Seriously, getting down the alley is a complete nightmare - you'll be sure to loose your excess if you have a hire car! Just look for the scratches on the walls!

That said, this is a great place to stay. You are only 5 mins walk into the centre of town, Caracella Therme is only another 5 mins from there. You are also perfectly placed for walks in the park.

The rooms / apartments are all modern and clean. All with bathroom.

Make sure you check with the owner though - we have stayed here twice and we have had problems both times. The first time the shower in our room was broken - we had to stay at the Regent Hotel at no extra cost and then transfer back to the Sunsine apartments for night 2.

On our second trip, the owner forgot we were coming i think despite confirming by email the week before. We had asked for a two bedroom apartment but had to make do with a one bed - our friend had to sleep on the sofa bed in our bedroom.

Having said that, the owner is lovely and very welcoming. Just make sure she has your booking and you will be fine.

Breakfast is across the street at the Hotel Regent - simple but nice.

You cant beat this place for the money - well worth it. Enjoy.

Warning.. if you don't like lots of stairs - don't get an apartment above the second one! The stairwell is also full of furniture which makes moving heavy suitcases difficult. We were in apartment 5 - We got tired of stairs very quickly!

My fiance and i stayed in this apartment complex in July 2007. It was good value for money and spacious, if not a little plain.

Only two main problems - no phone service in the apartment complex (I gather due to some "work" being done by the apartment owner's son) and the breakfast which was held at the nearby Regent Hotel. Both my fiance and I found the breakfast to be very poor and we instead made our own after buying food from the very close by shops. To compliment the owner, she did refund us the price of the breakfast.

As is typical for the area there is no a/c or fans and it was unusually hot while we were there. We did also have the 1st main bed collapse under us several times and the second bed was a little too noisy for romantic activities.

Location is excellent and is very close to all the main attractions.

I highly recommend the nearby "Chinese" restaraunt (which seems to be actually staffed by Vietnamese). We were able to feed both of us, with drinks, until we were stuffed full for under 30 Euro. The Lychee wine was just magical.

We stayed here for one night in a large apartments with a double bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom. They were basic but pleasantly decorated, clean and comfortable. We rang the lady who owned the apartments 30 mins before out arrival and she arrived shortly after we got there to let us in. She was very friendly and asked us to leave the money for our stay on the kitchen table in the morning! It was in a good location- near main square and spas. Overall, an enjoyable stay.
