Saint Etienne is indeed the heart of cycling heritage. This museum’s bicycle collection, among the best in the world, reflects Saint Etienne’s almost century-long role as hub of all things cycling, from the first safeties of the 1880s through development of multi-speed drivetrains. The 50-plus bikes displayed, spanning from early 19th century to present day along with components and ephemera from mostly France and Italy, do a fine job of telling the bicycle story, from recreation to professional racing to everyday transportation. The museum’s biggest surprise perhaps is that it’s almost impossible to learn about on the web, so you’ll likely experience that sometimes elusive pleasure — a tranquil French museum with a world-class collection.
