“Good, clean and friendly hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

I decided to opt for this small business hotel based on the trip advisor reviews and stayed for 3 nights for a work trip. It is what the reviews say: a good, clean and friendly hotel. I had the "tout confort" room. Keep in mind that this is not for the luxury set, but it was definitely clean and big enough for my needs. There are no elevators either and so you will need to carry your luggage up and down the stairs. The bed was comfortable and I slept well. My room was very quiet, but I was facing towards the inner area of the building. The ceiling of my room must be on the thin side since I could hear the people above me walking and moving and even their alarm clock woke me up one morning. The wifi works really well and it is complementary. Although I in general am not always a fan of the sweet French breakfasts, the bread and croissants they serve up are delicious and it definitely more than filled me up. It's nice to stay in well-run and friendly small hotel too instead of always staying in the big chains so I would definitely book here again when I next come to town.

You can fairly call the Continental a no-frills hotel, but it provides good basic comfort, a good bed and supportive pillows, is clean and very welcoming. It also boasts some original design. The owner - he seems to work 25 hour days - offers a friendly welcome and is happy to talk to guests about the town, its history and where to eat. Note: I was reliably informed that Aromatic, just opposite the hotel, was the best restaurant in town - it was booked on my two nights in St Etienne which backs up the claim.
This is a good place if you want a hotel that is not another anonymous, run-of-the-mill chain. I'll be back

A warm welcome and a comfortable, spacious modern room - just what we needed !

We took a room with two double beds (winner of a design award and shown on FR3 television), the big beds and bedding were super comfortable (for those who like firm matresses, crisp white bedlinen with large fluffy doonas) . The toilet was separate from the shower and sink which was practical as we were three. Breakfast was served with a smile.
We stayed just for a night to break a long journey so a pity we didn't get to see more of the town. Definitely an adresse to return to. Thank you.

Room Tip: It was a friday night and being in the center there was a bit of noise from the street (voices, not...

At the time of writing this review all the recent reviews are in French, which says a lot about this hotel. It is situated down a narrow one-way street and it's very easy to drive right past. The hotel does have a small garage but if you drive straight on at the end of the street through the traffic lights there is a large public car park about a 5 minute walk from the hotel.

Once inside the hotel is light and airy with imaginative decoration. A very warm welcome from the owners (Madame speaks excellent English), free wifi and we walked up to the room. No lift. The room was spotless and beautifully decorated, with a very comfortable bed. There was not a great deal of storage space, but quite enough for a one or two night stay.

The hotel is right in the centre of the city. Restaurants are all around but walking up to the Place Jean Jaunes will provide you with over a dozen options in one large square. There was a some traffic noise, and when we were there some construction work was taking place on the hotel opposite. The colours of the breakfast room light up your morning and the croissants were first rate. Observing the guests at breakfast it seemed that most were business people, which might explain why most of the recent reviews are in French. Highly recommendable, but be aware that getting into and out of St. Etienne needs a GPS and some luck as the road system is busy and complicated. But this hotel made the effort worthwhile.
