“Must see”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014

It was wonderful to see that the ruins not only have historic value but also that they serve a functional purpose as many concerts are conducted there.

“If visiting Fourviere Church come back by foot and visit the Roman Ruins”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2013

If coming back to city from Fourviere Basilica, don't take the cable car. Prefer to go back to the city center by foot and discover this very interesting historical site and its museum. If you like history, this is a place you can't miss.

“A hidden delight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

Many people coming to Lyon, don't realise the extent of the history here and that it was actually the ancient Romans who founded the city properly. Not far from the Basilica, you have 2 of the most gloriously preserved amphitheatres on the Roman empire. Which are still used today in the summer. Not very wheelchair friendly in parts, but they have made an effort to make sure some parts can be visited by everyone, which is a plus.

“Oh WOW!! And still being used!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

This really is a fantastic example (in fact there are two side by side!!) of Roman Amphitheatre and I love that it's still used regularly for concerts!!
It's free and very easy access.
The stone, Roman Carriageway leading up to the amphitheatres is fantastic too!!
The 'small' one holds a thousand people I'm told and the large one 4000,,
It's on the way up the hill towards the Basilica so it's well worth adding a few extra minutes to your plan to fit a quick stop off here.

“Nice and well-preserved (after restoration) Roman ruins”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

The place is very close the Lyon Cathedral and can be reached by a 2-minute walk from it. There are two ancient Greek-style theatres, a bigger one and a smaller one. You can walk all around and experience a great panoramic view of Lyon. The touristic information displays all around provide a very good introduction at the place.

There is also a museum, where you can find ancient reperts from the excavation process.
