My husband and I stayed for a week in August. Hotel Le Royal Lyon was our most expensive accommodation on our recent travels through France but ironically our least favourite. Yes, the rooms are large and grandly furnished and I agree with the reviewers that the staff are very helpful, the breakfast delicious, and the beds comfortable.
The things I didn’t like; there was a very large wall unit/wardrobe on one wall, which contained many shelves and housed the TV, but had only about 20cm of hanging rail – what were the designers thinking? Certainly not enough hanging space for 2 people.
I found it was impossible to have a shower (which was over the bath tub) and wash my hair without covering the bathroom floor in water, forming a river to the toilet and turning the whole floor into a skating rink. During a previous vacation in Italy, I slipped on a wet bathroom floor and broke a rib, so I can tell you first hand that a fall in the bathroom is a guaranteed way to ruin one's holiday! Fortunately enough towels were provided here which I could use to cover the floor, but this in my opinion is not what I expect to use hotel towels for! (I would also have appreciated a handrail over the tub, an indispensible bathroom accessory in my opinion, but one which I find lacking in many establishments). There was also no power point in the bathroom for a hair-styler. The hotel provides a hair dryer, but no facility for one’s own styler (which a lot of women use). There was a power point in the bedroom at the desk, but no mirror anywhere in the bedroom. These may sound like petty grievances but we have stayed at many hotels and B&B’s throughout France and Italy, most of them cheaper than this one, and this was a first for these particular omissions. When I spoke to the nice young lady at reception she told me that ‘all the rooms were the same’… I wonder? We also found some crawling insects (type of beetle?) in the bedroom and bathroom which were a bit off-putting! The hotel has been grandly and expensively furnished, but lacks some simple practicalities in my opinion.
