“Good nice hotel near the city centre”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2014

Things have improved since 2013! Rooms are newly furbished and quiet classy. Price has gone up a bit but still very reasonable. Near Place Carnot, the Perrache railway station (TGV to Paris) and walking distance from Place Bellecour. Service very friendly. Breakfast is good.

Room Tip: Try to avoid street side rooms on the ground floor.

I stayed 3 nights in this hotel. It is a bit away from Part Dieu train station (used for most TGV trips) but is close to the center. The attractions of Lyon are really distributed around the city so you cannot judge for its proximity for places unless there are specific choices. The rooms are basic, they are open to an inner courtyard. The hotel is really compact but friendly. All the staff are friendly and helpful. The Wi-Fi not so good.
Good value for money. Prepaid reservations on the internet will get you cheaper rates.

The owner/operators of this hotel, Gregory and Emmanuelle Couette, couldn't be more welcoming and accommodating but the property they have to work with is in great need of repair and upgrading. It is centrally located within walking distance of Place Carnot, Place Bellecour, with pedestrianized shopping streets close by, situated in a block of other hotels with the Vatel International Business School of Hotel and Tourism Management with its not-to-be-missed restaurant and local products store around the corner. However, the rooms almost beat Paris 2-star hotels for lack of space and definitely were in much worse condition. We saw several rooms as we tried to find one that was suitable. We ended up with a ground-floor room facing the interior courtyard with one large window that had to be covered with a metal shutter for privacy converting the room to a dark completely interior room with poor lighting, walls needing to be re-painted and the carpet cleaned. The queen-sized bed was comfortable but there were no reading lights and only one bedside table. The bathroom was large by any standard but the shower was open so that the entire floor was often sprayed by water. To get to the rooms, you have to pass through a very narrow passageway, confusing with many doors, and enter a courtyard with broken concrete--a bit of a hazard. It would be a wonderful centrally-located small hotel if these conditions could be corrected.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the courtyard are quieter, but seem to require metal shutters pulled down for privacy c...

I stayed for 4 days in July 2014. This is my second stay at this hotel. As a former resident and regular visitor to Lyon I have previously struggled to find a good value, clean hotel in a good location. Hotel de la Marne tick all these boxes. Close to Bellecour and a short walk to Vieux Lyon, the hotel is in a great location. I ended up in room 22, the same as my previous stay! The room is tastefully decorated and clean. It is rather small but I didn't intend to spend much time in my room so this suited me.

The staff were very friendly. I speak French but I know they can speak fluent English if needed. I didn't have breakfast during my stay but at 7 euro, it seems good value.

I will 100% recommend this hotel for people looking for a good value hotel in easy reach of all the main tourist areas, There are also a good number of bars and restaurants around the hotel if you do fancy staying near by.

The only issue is the free wifi doesn't reach all rooms. It's worth asking if this is essential so you get a room where the wifi does work consistently.

The hotel is not bad, the best thing about it is the bathroom, with all facilities. But the location is not that good if you are interested in staying near the highlights in the city.
But the worst thing of all: I got bitten by bedbugs in the bed!!!!! That was in room 22.
Yet something else: how come the people at reception in any hotel can only speak French!?

Room Tip: Make sure the bed in room 22 has no bedbugs!!!!

We had a little 2 room apartment an upstairs room with 2 double beds and on the ground floor another small bedroom. Everything was tiny, but very clean and newly renovated.

Our teenage children enjoyed that breakfast was served until 11:30!
It's in a central area.

The smallest, darkest room I have ever stayed in. There were shutters on the outside as well as the inside of the windows which the charming receptionist explained was 'because we are on the street'. There was a strong stale cigarette smell. It soon became apparent that you could not open the outer shutters as they opened across the pavement, hence the room was in total darkness night and day. We were woken by the noise of the teenage students congregating for start of school day with accompanied shouting and smoking: That explained the smoke smell.

The darkness was a blessing in disguise, as the stained carpet was not quite so obvious. The lights above the sink were both broken, and the ineffective hairdryer kept cutting out. No soap was supplied, but there was shampoo.

We were moved to a equally small room but facing the inner courtyard. There were seven air-con units outside our window humming away, but it was a relief from screaming teenagers, and at least we could have daylight.

The hotel photos convey a shabby chic atmosphere, but it was definitely more shabby than chic - in serious need of maintenance.

On the plus side, the staff were all very friendly and helpful, and the location was a reasonable walk from the main square, restaurant and sights in the centre of old Lyon.

We have stayed in plenty of basic hotels, and appreciate you get what you pay for, but there is no excuse for bad maintenance or bad housekeeping; and you really can't put paying guests into a room with no daylight.

Room Tip: Do not accept room 17 or 18. Right onto street at ground floor level. The rooms in the courtyard a...
