“It was a small room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2012

A very small room. The hotel looks great from the outside and from the foyer, but then again it is just a mercure. Not sure I would stay here again for anything other than the location. Did I mention the room was VERY small.

Room Tip: Ask for a larger room... if they have them

“Weeken visit by 8 friends”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2012

This hotel was universally declared perfect for our short break, Central, very good breakfast, Rooms, while small were spotless. Tea coffee facilities provided. Staff was friendly and very helpful when recommending places to eat. A word of warning, however. There is a night club across the street. I would suggest asking for a room at the back. At the weekend there was a degree of noise which went on into the wee small hours. Nevertheless th.is is a definite thumbs up

Room Tip: As I said, ask for a room at the back if a light sleeper

“Location, location, location.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2012

Location is the best thing about this hotel. It is located in the heart of Lyon, close to shops, restaurants and Bellecour, the most famous square of the city.
However, the rooms need to be renovated and get a decent air-conditioning system asap. Some of the bathroom tiles were dislocated and it was not possible to open the room window. They should also reconsider the price of the breakfast given that there are great alternatives just around the corner.

“Weekend trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2011

Rooms are small, service friedndly, clean rooms, good located, you can reach all important sites by foot including the old town in a few minutes. Beakfast expensive, outside in a french cafee you find simpler solutions.
Die Zimmer sind klein aber sauber, service gut und freundlich, gut gelegen, alles in wenigen Minuten zu Fuss erreichbar, Frühstück teuer

“Central for Lyon Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2011

Our extended family of five took two rooms (standard double and junior suite) for a short overnight stay in Lyon. The Mercure Plaza Republique is in a good location to walk to most major sites of interest. Clean and safe public parking was nearby (within about a block), but as most other reviewers have noted, it gets pretty expensive - unfortunately I think this is unavoidable for anyone coming by car.

The hotel itself is in a nice older building that fits in well with its surroundings. The inside is bit lackluster, although very clean and certainly adequate. The front desk staff were efficient enough, but the breakfast staff were pretty slow and disinterested. We chose the "express" breakfast option of breads, coffee and orange juice for 7euro over the full buffet which seemed overpriced. On a Sunday morning, however, please note there are few (no?) breakfast options outside the hotel, unless you want to visit another hotel and have their buffet.

We stayed in the junior suite, which was very large, with a king size bed and a pull-out sofa bed that was fine for a child. There was no outside noise at all. The room was clean, although not charming or fancy in any way. There was only a smaller window and just a plain wall where one would imagine a bigger window would or should be. There are separate toilet and shower/bath rooms, closets with a safe, mini bar fridge, hot water kettle, extra pillows and other basic ammenities. Over the weekend, when hotel prices seem to be lower in Lyon, we found the room rate to be appropriate and therefore the stay was a good value.

Lyon itself is a great place to visit - it is sometimes overlooked because other French cities have more obvious attractions, but Lyon has a great vibrant feel, excellent restaurants, classic French architecture, nice river and hilltop vistas, and some excellent archeological and medieval sites. All that is easily enjoyed from this hotel. This was our second visit to Lyon and we'd go back again.
