“One cannot say really much after one night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

But what I really liked was that staff was very friendly and useful (and very communicate in both French and English), they really took time and gave effort to help.

The room was a standard Mercure room - rather modern and clean. The bed and pillows, but this might be a matter of taste, were too hard.

Huge minus is the small bathroom. OK, it was clean, but I don't like that it look like being made of one pre-built element, it looks cheap. I would rather expect that in an Etap hotel, but not in Mercure. I wouldn't also recommend to have breakfast in the hotel. The price was rather too high, and one can find lots of nice places for French breakfast within 15-minutes walk.

Good location, rather expensive hotel parking (I believe it could be cheaper to park in the garage located two blocks away) - one day costs as much as one day at Lyon airport. Even if you do not trust strangers driving your car, allow them to bring your car to the parking, the way up in that building is a nightmare.

But anyway, I would recommend this hotel if someone asked me about place to stay in Lyon.

Room Tip: Even with air-condition being turn on it was quite warm in the room, but one could not sleep with op...

Six of us stayed here for a weekend trip to Lyon. We chose the hotel on the strength of its location, the price and the views expressed in TripAdvisor - and we weren't disappointed. It was a little bit further from the station than we anticipated, but that wasn't a big issue.

We were each given good rooms with king-size beds. The rooms all had minibars (expensive) and safes and very large flat screen TVs. My bed was very comfortable and my room was quiet, overlooking a side street.

We dined in Le Garage, the hotel restaurant, one evening, having not even realised that it was the hotel's restaurant when we came across it in the street round the corner. It was nothing short of excellent and I have reviewed the restaurant separately. Needless to say, we were also served breakfast in this restaurant. Breakfast was very good with a comprehensive range of food available, though they struggled to keep up with clean plates and cutlery on one of the mornings. I booked breakfast when booking the rooms and was only charged £3 extra. Given that the breakfast is actually €16.90, this represented a real bargain. Interestingly, though, I don't know how they know who has paid and who hasn't as most of us were never asked for our room numbers on either morning.

There was a pleasant bar with very expensive beer (€8.00 for a small glass) and conversely some ridiculously cheap top wines (e.g. Côtes de Beaune, Premier Cru for €6.50 a glass).

All in all, a very good hotel at a very good price in a reasonably central location. Would definitely come back again.

Four of us stayed at the Mercure for 4 days and we all loved the hotel for its modern and comfortable style. The rooms are large with windows that actually open, a safe, fridge, chairs, table, huge bed (with beautiful, cool, soft linen), lots of mirrors and a 'rainforest' walk-in shower. The breakfast wasn't included in the very reasonable tariff but was worth the extra on the day as it was very good. The staff were extremely helpful, spoke good English and were happy to book restaurants, taxis and to give advice. The room-cleaning staff were polite and helpful and carefully tidied our toilietries in the bathroom. Would definitely recommend this hotel even though it is on the other side of the Rhone and in the business district as it was quiet and very easy to cross the bridges to the busier hub of Presqu'ile and the Vieux Ville.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet

We, my husband and I, stayed here for 3 nights in October 2012. First impressions - excellent. The reception staff were most welcoming, and bi-lingual, which was a relief! We had paid in advance, so they just took the card details for breakfasts, etc. The room was lovely, v. well decorated with a king-size bed, good-sized flat TV and well-equipped en suite shower. We went mad on the first night and ordered a bottle of wine from Room Service, it was very good and they were very quick to deliver. Found a fab 'Bouchon Lyonnais', Daniel et Denise, round the corner. The food was delicious and it was packed with French people. We ate there two nights running. Can't fault the room or staff at hotel. Breakfasts were slightly chaotic- we left our table to go and get some egg and bacon, and the staff cleared away our coffee, cutlery, napkins and juice?? Good selection of food tho, cereals, fruit, rolls, bread, yoghurts, ham, cheese, etc. Quite pricey at 17.50 euros each I thought. You have to eat a lot to get your money's worth. Apart from chaotic breakfast, the only other niggle I have is that the towels were quite not bath sheets, so were quite small. Neither of us is large, but even so it was a bit draughty! That is why I give it 4 stars, but I would stay there again without hesitation.

I stayed in this hotel for only 2 nights. It was nice and central in the town.
It was across the river from the main old town but it was still easy to get there and walking distance to the river for a nice river walk.
The rooms were nice and clean. it had its own bar and the good amenities. Choice of smoking room or non which is rare these days.
Staff were very helpful and friendly. Which for France i thought was a real bonus.

Stayed in a few Mercure hotels and sometime found them a bit dated, but not the Saxe Lafayette. The look and feel here is modern and fresh. Service levels were excellent, my only concern was on checking out took time to complete with only two staff on the front desk. Excellent for a weekend break. Close to the old part of the city, so there is no reason not to get your walking shoes on. Saturday morning market down by the river is a delightful way to spend sometime. Many restaurants and bar close by. Halle de Lyon is a culinary delight and only five minutes walk away from the hotel so there is no reason not to stand, or sit down and enjoy a good wine and some excellent food, oysters come to that and watch the world go by.

Room Tip: Weekend rates are cheaper then during the week. Book on line and you get some good deals, like free...

We stayed here for just two nights, so the convenience to both the train station and the old part of town was great. This is a modernly styled hotel and appears to have been recently updated, so the room had new fixtures, tv, lighting, beds, and it was very spacious (particularly for France). The staff were extremely friendly and communicated well. The price for our room was very reasonable. The only complaint I have is that the gym and pool did not open until 9 am, and it would have been nice if it opened at 6 or 7 am.
